How bad are things for Eli Manning.  Bad enough that former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms would actually demote Manning from the ranks of the elite. Simms didn't hold back anything when he was asked about the two-time Super Bowl MVP winner on "NFL Monday Quarterback" on CBS Sports Network. "No, he's not one of the elites.  Because when I hear the word "elite," I'm thinking about guys that can make unbelievable plays on the field by themselves," said Simms — a Super Bowl MVP himself. "There are very few quarterbacks in that category.  Yes, Eli has been a tremendous team player.  he has been MVP of the Super Bowl twice.  I know that. But the way I look at it, the answer is no." The once beleaguered Manning got himself into tossed into the comparisons with the NFL's best quarterbacks after he said he saw himself as an elite quarterback when asked prior to the 2011 season.  He backed it up by leading  the Giants to a second Lombardi Trophy in five years. Manning started this season where he left off in February — and was an early MVP candidate— but a three game slump, where he has failed to throw a touchdown pass, has sparked the debates about whether his skills or a couple of lucky catches made him a winner. One Hall of Fame quarterback has come to Manning's defense. "You can't spell elite without Eli.  The pressure situations that Eli has thrived in over his short career in my mind make him an elite quarterback," said former San Diego Charger Dan Fouts, who also appeared on the show. " All you have to do is look back at his two Super Bowl wins and the way he beat the Patriots." While Manning takes a few days off from throwing during the Giants bye week, the debate will rage over whether or not his arm is tired.  Exhausted or not, he still has three fourth-quarter comebacks this season. "I have to give him a nod and say Eli is elite," added Fouts.

Manning has gone from MVP to playing like rookie

With the New York Giants off to a 6-2 start and holding a big lead in the NFC East, two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning was a legit MVP candidate. Not anymore. After two straight losses and some pathetic offensive play, Manning is now hearing the other side of the equation from fans and critics. His golden arm looks tired and his play is reminiscent of his rookie season when teams...

Giants, Eli Manning go flat in blowout loss

CINCINNATI - The New York Giants have been down this road in Novembers past and still made it to February. After flatlining Sunday in a 31-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, they have to hope they can regroup, recharge and come back from their upcoming bye weekend ready to play like the Giants of the last several seasons -- and even the team they were several weeks ago. Besides...

Giants struggles: Don’t blame Eli Manning

It’s been a rough month for Eli Manning. Other than his rookie season in 2004, it’s probably been the toughest three-week stretch of the Giants’ quarterback career. Still, with the media jumping all over Manning’s back, the New York Giants struggles, on both sides of the ball, shouldn’t be shouldered to the two-time super bowl MVP. Instead, the bulk of the Giants...

Phil Simms Says Eli Manning, Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Dan Fouts Are Not Elite Quarterbacks

The word “elite” get thrown around in football a lot, but no one really knows what it refers to. Does it mean that player is currently Top 5 among their position? Does it mean they’re Top 10 at their position all time? Or does it mean that they’re a future hall of famer? To Phil Simms, it may be an even higher honor. Simms created some controversy on Monday when he said that...

Phil Simms Says Giants QB Eli Manning Is A Champion, But He's Not Elite

Phil Simms needs to make up his mind about Eli Manning. Last summer, with Manning's second Super Bowl MVP trophy still fresh on the brain, the former Giants great said Manning and New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin were destined for the Hall of Fame. On CBS Sports Network's "NFL Monday QB" -- hosted by NFL.com's own Adam Schein -- Simms was less laudatory...

Tom Couglin Calls Out Eli Manning’s Play: “Terrible” “Foolish”

Per a report for the New York Daily News Gary Myers, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was so frustrated with his 2-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning that he used “terrible” and “foolish” to describe instances where Manning should have protected the ball better versus trying to make a play. Coughlin typically generalizes his criticism publicly, rarely singling...

2 faces of November: Tony Romo vs Eli Manning

We’re seeing something this season very similar to what we have over the last five years in the quality of play from Tony Romo and Eli Manning during the month of November. For some odd reason, the performances over the last five years or so of these two elite quarterbacks have been closely compared but in November they seem to end up on opposite ends of the field. It turns out...

How the New York Giants Are in the Perfect Situation…Sort of

To say that the New York Giants played a bad game on Sunday would be an understatement.  Watching that game, many would think that this was the worst game the Giants have played in recent years. After watching that game, it was hard to tell if the team that was just on the TV was the Giants or if it was a misprint and everyone just watched the Jets. Despite the horrendous game and...
