In a move that surprised many, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted quarterback Matt Barkley out of the University of Southern California in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.  The Eagles were originally linked to having interest in Geno Smith and E.J. Manuel, but they ended up passing on both of them as they filled other important positions before making the plunge at quarterback. Barkley was ranked second at his position at the draft although he didn’t go until the fourth round.  He has the experience of running a pro-style offense at USC so the transition from college to the NFL should be a smooth one.  USC designed the offense so that the pocket could move.  This allowed Barkley to show his accuracy while on the move.  Speaking of accuracy, Barkley is very accurate in the short and mid-range passes.  His long-range accuracy is not as good but his receivers adjusted to get under the ball.  The main weakness to Barkley’s passing game is that he is inconsistent when he is under pre...

Eagles QB Michael Vick and His Ability to Read a Defense

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick has always had questions around him about his ability to read and diagnose opposing defenses while at the line of scrimmage.  For the most part, the consensus has been that he doesn’t do it well, if at all. It’s a notion that I usually agree with in terms of generalities, but if I was taking a test that had a yes or no question that read ”Can...

Brandon Graham, Trent Cole may have a hard time with Chip Kelly’s 3-4 defense

Trent Cole and has been one of the NFL’s best pass rushers over the course of his career and now he’ll be an outside linebacker in the Eagles new 3-4 defense under new head coach Chip Kelly. Cole will now have to learn how to drop back into pass coverage and read opposing offenses a lot more.  I can’t see this change as a good thing. The same goes for Brandon Graham, who...

Andy Reid Trolls Eagles & Chip Kelly By Playing Music During Practice

The Chip Kelly era has begun in Philadelphia, and a lot has changed since Andy Reid left the city.  Kelly has gotten rid of fast food and tacos. He’s moved the lockerroom around, and sped up the pace of his practices.  The one huge thing that the media here in Philadelphia has been focused on though, is Kelly blasting music during his practices. Kelly made news earlier this week...

Eagles' Jason Avant, Clay Harbor Taking Snaps On Defense

But if you were looking for immediate surprises during training camp, look no further.Veteran wide receiver Jason Avant and tight end Clay Harbor were recently assigned to spend a day practicing on defense, with Avant taking reps at defensive back...

Eagles putting trust in young players

Too often, players in the NFL, especially those fresh from the draft, have a hard time adjusting to life in the NFL. It requires hard work, but it also requires a high level of responsibility. The problem is that these young men are also newly wealthy people, and when they're given too much free time, bad things will often follow. Under head coach Chip Kelly, the Philadelphia...

Donovan McNabb Deserves to Have His Number Retired by the Philadelphia Eagles

Boy, talk about a story that shouldn’t drum up any controversy but somehow has. Donovan McNabb is quite simply one of the best quarterbacks to play in the last twenty years. His resume speaks for itself, but somehow, I don’t think many fans realize or take the time to look at where he stands next to some of the all-time greats. McNabb currently sits at No. 17 all-time in terms...
