Philadelphia Eagles 2024 NFL Draft Analysis And Grade
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles did not sit on their hands in the 2024 NFL Draft. GM Howie Roseman spent the three days of the draft wheeling and dealing. The Eagles set the record for the number of trades during draft weekend. Did all of those moves end in a successful draft?

Philadelphia Eagles 2024 NFL Draft Class

Draft picks

  • Toledo DB Quinyon Mitchell (No. 22 overall)
  • Iowa DB Cooper DeJean (No. 40)
  • Houston Christian LB Jalyx Hunt (No. 94)
  • Clemson RB Will Shipley (No. 127)
  • Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith (No. 152)
  • Clemson LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (No. 155)
  • Michigan OG Trevor Keegan (No. 172)
  • Florida State WR Johnny Wilson (No. 185)
  • N.C. State C Dylan McMahon (No. 190)

The Philadelphia Eagles struck gold with their first two picks. Their secondary needed help. With the run of quarterbacks, they were able to nab Quinyon Mitchell 22nd overall. He was the number one corner on my board. Then, they traded up to grab Iowa star Cooper DeJean, who many had as a first-round pick. The secondary all of a sudden becomes incredibly interesting.

Best Pick Of The Class: DB Quinyon Mitchell

The Philadelphia Eagles were the clear winners of the first round of the NFL Draft. In the weeks leading up to the draft, Mitchell was a top-15 pick. If the Eagles were going to get a top cornerback, they would have to trade up. Instead, they sat back and got one of the top corners in the class.

The only knock on him is that he played in a weak MAC conference. He is a sticky cornerback whose footwork is top-notch. Mitchell has the recovery speed to close the gap on faster receivers. This is a plug and play starter for a defense that is looking to show the back half of last year was a fluke.

Most Questionable Pick In The Draft: LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

This felt like a legacy pick for the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a great story to sell to the fans, but the pick is questionable. Trotter Jr.’s tape is fine, but nothing spectacular. His injury history is concerning, and he may not make it to a second contract. Giving up precious draft capital for a legacy pick is not usually a winning strategy.

I will say the Eagles had awful linebacker play last year. The motivation of playing on the same team as your dad is also a factor we cannot account for. The Clemson linebacker could come out to show that he can be a franchise legend just like his dad.

Most Interesting Pick: WR Johnny Wilson

The Philadelphia Eagles are set at the wide receiver position at the top of the depth chart. AJ Brown and Devonta Smith both received extensions this offseason. However, Wilson is a solid receiver who has the tools to make it onto the field during his rookie year. While there are a lot of mouths to feed on this offense with Dallas Goedert and Saquon Barkley, Wilson could emerge as the team’s WR3.

The Philadelphia Eagles navigated this draft very well. They got immediate needs filled while also preparing for the future not just with players but with picks.
