Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid returned to the team on Wednesday a few days after his 29-year-old son’s funeral. Reid claimed it was “the right thing to do” and he plans to coach the team’s preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

Reid’s son Garrett was found dead Sunday morning in his dorm room at Lehigh University, where he was assisting the Eagles’ strength and conditioning coach during training camp. He was just 29 years old.

After more than 900 people attended the funeral, Reid claimed he felt humbled by the support. Former players, general managers, coaches and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attended the service on Tuesday.

Garrett Reid was a recovering drug addict and those close to him believed he had turned his life around. Many are assuming the young man had a relapse that led to his death.

The team was happy to see its coach back and they are dedicating their season to his son. Receiver DeSean Jackson had the following to say about his coach returning to the fold:

“We just want to uplift him, uplift his spirits and everything like that and just make him feel in a comfort zone where he doesn’t have to worry about too many things. It’s really an honor to have him as our head coach. He’s really a great guy, so whatever it is we have to do to keep him up in spirits and keep him going. That’s what we’re here for.”

Hopefully Reid and his family will find solace in the fact that so many people have reached out and shared their condolences.
