The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a deal on Thursday morning to bring back a key piece from last season’s defense. The Eagles have kept most of the defense relatively stable for the upcoming season.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense will look different … and the same

The Eagles lost Fletcher Cox due to retirement and Haason Reddick in a trade with the New York Jets. The Eagles were able to persuade Josh Sweat to stay in Philadelphia on a restructured contract. The Eagles received a huge help in the secondary when they brought back C.J. Gardner Johnson from the Detroit Lions.

Now, they’ll have another member from the 2022 NFC Championship secondary back for the 2024 campaign.

Avonte Maddox is coming back to Philadelphia

Per Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Eagles are signing cornerback Avonte Maddox on a one-year deal.

Maddox will help with run defense

Per Pro Football Focus, Maddox earned a 50.6 overall grade for his play last season. He was atrocious in pass coverage, allowing opposing quarterbacks a 114.9 passer rating. He earned a 76.4 grade for his run defense.
