The Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday cut their 2011 2nd-round draft pick, safety Jaiquawn Jarrett. They didn’t want to do it. Who wants to admit defeat on a 54th overall selection in the draft after just 17 games? The fact that he survived the final cuts to the 53-man roster tells you that. He had a disastrous showing in the first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, missing critical tackles and looking overall like he had no idea what he was–or was supposed to be–doing. After that he did nothing egregious, and was even decent in the Birds’ final preseason outing against the Jets. But the fact that the bar for a 2nd-round pick, who should be able to come out and shine as a starter in his first year, turned into “at least he didn’t mess up too badly” shows the depth of the problem. Just think of one of this year’s 2nd-round picks, linebacker Mychal Kendricks. He he has come completely as billed and has exceeded the already high expectations set for him. Not so with Jaiquaw...
