It's here.Ater eight months, the 2013 regular season is within arms-reach. There may have not been a regular-season game played yet, but that doesn't mean we aren't getting a good look as to how the Eagles team and depth chart will look come opening day (well, the next night to be exact). So what did we see from Chip Kelly and the Eagles during the last week of the preseason?1. Eagles Fall To Jets In Final Preseason Game, 20-27While it might seem like a red flag to lose a game to a team like the Jets, it came in the preseason and both teams sat their starters. There wasn't much to see all around but we did get to witness a few peculiar things. Like Kurt Coleman who subbed in at cornerback after Trevard Lindley went down. Not to be outdone in the spotlight however, the son of Phil Simms (Matt) who played the whole game for the Jets, throwing the ball a whopping 44 times!2. There Is Still Still No Winner In Safety BattleIt seems this will be the final roster battle decided. Newly acquired Patrick Chung is the only safety out of the entire group that is expected to start day one. Who he plays next to is anyones guess. The front-runner appears to be Nate Allen, but rookie Earl Wolff could certainly take a step ahead of him if Kelly sees the talent. It's certainly a surprise Kelly would wait this long to name a starter, but then again, the Eagles do play in the final game of the week-- so he has time to make the right choice.3. Eagles Make Final Cuts; Release Former First-Rounder Danny WatkinsEvery team goes through the same proccess in late August, trimming down the roster to make it the league-required 53. For the Eagles, there were some names who were expected to be on the list, and of course some that weren't. Some notable names were QB Dennis Dixon, TE Clay Harbor, WR Russell Sheppard and, most notably, 2011 bust Danny Watkins. While the Eagles could miss some of the talent they let go, they certainly turned some heads by not releasing some low-key players. The one everyone seems to focus on, is LB Casey Matthews, who has had anything but success with the Eagles. Matthews played his college ball under Kelly, so one has to wonder if the rookie head coach is making decisions with his heart, not head. Considering he was able to let Dixon walk, my guess (and hope) is that's not the case. Thanks for keeping up on the series and be sure to check out all my articles this coming season, starting today!
