While the score of the game doesn’t matter, the Philadelphia Eagles are now one step closer to the 2012 regular season after a 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the pre-season opener Thursday night. During the pre-season, I will be breaking down the games with a “highs and lows” section. This will show what players/units shined and which still need work before the season opener at Cleveland. Highs: QB Nick Foles: Rookie quarterback Nick Foles showed last night why the Eagles used their third round draft pick on him. Foles completed six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70 yard touchdown to wide receiver Damaris Johnson. K Alex Henery: The second year place kicker started the pre-season off with a bang when he hit a 51 yard game winning field goal. WR Damaris Johnson sprints towards the endzone for a 70 yard touchdown pass from QB Nick Foles. Henery, who set an NFL accuracy record for rookie kickers last season, seems to have picked up right where he left o...

Eagles preseason opener reveals Nick Foles should be Eagles’ #2 QB

The first Philadelphia Eagles preseason game of 2012 is in the books and the Eagles eeked out a 24-23 win over the Steelers. One thing was made abundantly clear during the game: Nick Foles should be Mick Vick’s backup over Mike Kafka. Kafka did nothing to assuage concerns about his viability as a backup for Vick, and a scare with the thumb on Vick’s throwing hand further impressed...

Is Nick Foles the Philadelphia Eagles’ New Backup Quarterback?

Eric Hartline / US PRESSWIRE If you’ve heard anything about the Philadelphia Eagles in the past 24 hours, it was probably about their current quarterback situation.  Michael Vick’s injured thumb will not keep him from missing any practice time or preseason action, however, Mike Kafka, his backup, suffered a fracture on his non-throwing hand in the preseason opener against the...

Nick Foles steps up to the 2s after Mike Kafka injury

Mike Kafka Well, whaddya know. After being the talk of Thursday night’s preseason game against the Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles is now in the #2 QB spot. But it’s not due to any controversy at the position. It’s because Mike Kafka’s left (non- throwing) hand was stepped on and broken during the game. Kafka is expected to be out for 2-3 weeks...

Mike Kafka Injured, Nick Foles to Step in as Number Two Quarterback

Eagles backup quarterback Mike Kafka suffered a broken left hand in the Eagles 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Kafka played through the injury during the game, but will now be sidelined as his left hand is heavily wrapped.  Kafka throws with his right hand, so he is still participating in a limited role during practice.  Today he threw during individual drills...

Eagles pull out a emotional win in the final seconds against the Steelers

It has been a trying week for the Philadelphia Eagles organization and most importantly it’s coach Andy Reid. As Reid took the field to coach his team just days after his son Garrett died, he was showered with love from an Eagles fanbase that he has had his ups and downs with. Eagles 24, Steelers 23

PHILADELPHIA - Each team has a Pro Bowl quarterback, but the star of this show was an unheralded rookie playing in his first NFL game. Quarterback Nick Foles, the Philadelphia Eagles' third-round pick from Arizona, threw two long touchdown passes on Thursday night to lead the Eagles to a 24-23 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lincoln Financial Field. Foles...

Recent Depth Chart Changes For the Eagles a Cause for Concern?

Yong Kim/ Staff Photographer There were a few temporary or possibly permanent depth chart moves by the Philadelphia Eagles at training camp over this past weekend. A starting player was demoted to second string, a second-stringer may have been bumped to the third team and a third-stringer is now running with the twos. Okay, first things first... Though nobody knew it at...

Eagles rookies providing boost to return game

Philadelphia special teams coordinator Bobby April, one of the best kicking-games coaches in the league, proclaimed during the offseason that the Eagles' return game, among the worst in the league in 2011, would be significantly better. It's just one preseason opener, so no one should jump to any premature conclusions, but the early indications are that the additions of...

Thanks to the Backups, Eagles Edge Steelers in Preseason Opener

AP Photo/ Michael Perez In a game dedicated to Garrett Reid, it was the Eagles' third and fourth-stringers who saved the day.  If we didn't know any better, we would have thought Nick Foles and Trent Edwards were the first and second string quarterbacks. Michael Vick and Mike Kafka were dreadful as the first and second team offenses failed to score...
