In a stunning move, the Philadelphia Eagles have hired Chip Kelly as their new head coach. The news comes just a week after Kelly announced that he would forgo the NFL to stay at the University of Oregon. It is not clear how the Eagles changed his mind, but it doesn’t really matter now does it? A deal is done and Chip Kelly is now the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. Here is the statement released by Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie: “Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles. He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh energetic approach to our team.” The reaction from the Philadelphia fans have been mixed. Many fans are excited to see a coach with an innovative, fast paced offense. Other fans are concerned because Kelly has never coached in the NFL and they believe that his offense will not work at the professional level. One thing I think all fans can agree on is that it is nice to see a new head coach in Philadelphia. Andy Reid was a very good coach, but his time had run out in Philly. Some quick notes on Chip Kelly: He spent four years at the University of Oregon and accumulated a record of 46-7. Oregon averaged just under 50 points per game under Kelly and played for the National Championship in 2010, which resulted in a loss to Auburn. Oregon did, however, win two Rose Bowls and one Fiesta Bowl in Kelly’s short tenure as head coach. The official press conference announcing Chip Kelly as coach will be tomorrow at 1:30 pm. More information will be available on at that time.

Eagles reportedly felt Jon Gruden would be too high maintenance

During an appearance on Inside the Locker Room with Rick “Doc” Walker  and Brian Mitchell of ESPN 980, Walker asked Howard Eskin of WIP in Philly why the Eagles never pursued Jon Gruden. “The Eagles internally felt Jon was too high maintenance.  They looked at the way it ended for him in Tampa…….They thought he’d be too high maintenance,” said Eskin. Gruden seems...

Michael Vick likely done in Philly, even with addition of Chip Kelly

Howard Eskin of WIP in Philadelphia was a guest on ESPN 980′s Inside the Lockerroom and indicated that even though Chip Kelly is now the Eagles’ head coach, quarterback Michael Vick is still likely on the way out. “People say maybe Mike Vick can be his (Kelly’s) quarterback. Michael Vick won’t be here.  He gets hurt every year. You got to move on from Michael Vick, and...

Gang Green defense to return to Philly as eagles close to signing Gus Bradley

Last night Howard Eskin reported that the Eagles will soon be signing a deal to make Seattle’s Gus Bradley Head Coach. In what we should clearly be excited about, the new Gang Green Defense! Bradley helped lead Seattle to the playoffs with the number four ranked defense and number one scoring defense. A huge departure from the offense first under Andy Reid, Jeff Lurie said that...

Eagles, Gus Bradley not a done deal yet

It was reported earlier that Gus Bradley will be the Philadelphia Eagles’ new head coach.  It looks like that report was premature. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bradley will arrive in Philly today for a second interview and is also scheduled to meet with the Jaguars. Even though nothing is certain, I think...

Andy Reid ready for new challenges with Chiefs

Fired after 14 years with the Philadelphia Eagles in his first head coaching position, Andy Reid will take over for Romeo Crennel in Kansas City. The Chiefs finished the 2012 season 2-14, their worst season in franchise history. Andy Reid is a man of many words. He just never says anything significant. After 14 seasons, five NFC championship appearances and one loss in the Super...
