The Philadelphia Eagles hired Dave “Crazy Eyes” Fipps to be their special teams coordinator, and to orchestrate a playbook better than former special teams coordinator, Bobby April. Whether it is the explosive DeSean Jackson, talented Jeremy Maclin, or Damaris Johnson returning punts, this part of the depth chart will remain unofficial until September. What you can expect from Fipps is to flip the switch on a new punter as early as July. He’s an Australian punter. No, not Sav Rocca, but Brad Wing.         The undrafted punter from LSU might be a diamond in the rough if all goes well. Wing was a semi-finalist for the 2011 Ray Guy Award (Best punter in college football), which provides evidence for his powerful, and accurate left leg. When you need him to make a clutch punt, he delivers. Wing’s best boot came against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2011. With more than a couple minutes remaining in a 4th quarter three point LSU lead, he booted a 72 yard punt deep from his own end zone (50+ yards in the air). Here is the video of his clutch kick. Wing is arguably one of the best punters college football has seen in quite some time, yet, one of the most notorious too. The NCAA instituted a new rule that same year, which involves on-field taunting. Section 2, Article 1 of college football’s rules implies that if a player taunts directly to the opposition, there will be a penalty distributed on the spot. He executed a fake-punt to near perfection, except the fact that he spread his “wings” too far and for too long. He received a 15 yard flag at the spot of where he prematurely celebrated, and cost the Tigers a 52 yard touchdown. Thus, being the first college football player to ever exemplify the (at the time) new rule. Here is a video of the fake punt. Not to mention, according to NOLA.com, he was arrested for simple battery in the summer of 2011. Hopefully, nothing related of that matter or worse will ever popup throughout his life again. There is a well-known song amongst people with a religious background entitled, “On Eagle’s Wings.” Most would describe the song as an extremely devotional song. The composer, Michael Joncas was by no means intending this song to be inferred to Dave Fipp’s devotion for Brad Wing. Other Eagles’ punting competition Donnie Jones will give everything he has once training camp rolls around, but Wing’s athletic ability may be the key factor in deciding who becomes the next Jeff Feagles. 200 yards rushing, and 60 yards passing for a college punter will surely “raise him up” as far as the competition goes.
