The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off of a week 1 performance that left fans both ecstatic about what the future holds, as well as with a cloud of concern over the Eagles’ inability to put the game away. Philly held on for the win, but not without some late game drama on the part of a 20-0 run by the Washington Redskins. The Eagles’ week 2 foes, the San Diego Chargers, are in a similar boat. They also jumped out to an enormous lead, but failed to restrain their opponents from surging back. However, unlike the Eagles, the Chargers were not able to completely hold off the Houston Texans, and dropped what should have been a week 1 victory. This week 2 matchup between the Eagles and “Cha-jaws”, as Governor Schwarzenegger would say, boast rosters with talent and potential, as well as offences that have frequent mental lapses. The defenses were both impressive in their week 1 matchups until the fourth quarter. Guys like Cary Williams, and Trent Cole made their presence felt, rushing the quarterback. On the defensive side of the ball for the Chargers, Jarret Johnson and Cam Thomas had an impact in their week 1 game against the Texans. However, while the San Diego defense looked solid for three quarters, they are traveling to Philly banged up. Manti Te’o is listed as out, as well as defensive end Corey Liuget and Sean Lissemore. That begs the question, is the Chargers defense going to be able to keep up with the fast paced attack of the Eagles’ offense? A steady dose of Lesean McCoy can be expected, given his fantasy football happy performance in week one. As the Eagles continue to move at a rapid pace with each play occurring within less than 20 seconds apart, Lesean McCoy is going to be the main beneficiary of this. One of the main purposes of having a no huddle offense, such as the one Chip Kelly implements, is that it wears down the defense. Defensive players are not used to hurrying up to the line of scrimmage after every single play. Therefore, over the course of a game, McCoy will not be hit as hard or as often, allowing his Barry Sanders “esque”, open field moves to stay in tact for the whole game. Phillip Rivers has weapons to work with in San Diego. It is a shame that the offense has not been accompanied by a strong defense in the past couple of years. Ryan Mathews is finally healthy, but can only be used minimally because of a collarbone made of glass. Antonio Gates showed flashes of the Antonio Gates that was once considered the best tight end in football. Linebacker Demeco Ryans is going to play a key part in keeping Gates off limits to Rivers, especially down in the red zone. (Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images North America) On the outside, young stud, wide receiver Vincent Brown and speedy, slot man Eddie Royal can potentially wreak havoc for the Eagles’ defense if they do not pressure Rivers. Pro Bowl pass rusher Trent Cole can do just that with a little help from Cornerback Cary Williams, who was outstanding in week 1 with a timely interception as well as a sack coming off of the edge. This week 2 matchup between the Chargers and Eagles is the home opener at Lincoln Financial Field, so Philly fans will be showering the Bolts with more love than usual, if you know what I mean. In a game with two teams like this, who at times look super bowl bound and at others seem to be playing for next year’s number one draft pick, the game is never going to be out right over. Each team has the offensive capabilities to claw their way back from a large deficit, as well as make countless errors to put their defense’s back against the wall. The offensive line of the Eagles no longer seems to be an issue, allowing Vick to be a pass first, run second quarterback and when that happens, the Eagles are tough to beat. Eagles win 24-13.
