Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill is finally swimming with the competition at Miami Dolphins' training camp, where a three-way battle will include veteran David Garrard and incumbent starter Matt Moore.

Tannehill was up and down through two days of training camp, including an erratic day Monday. The Dolphins were given an off day by coach Joe Philbin Tuesday, but Tannehill is expected to continue studying film and getting in the work it will take for him to chase down Moore for the starting job.

"I thought he threw the ball very well (Sunday)," Philbin said. "I want to say he had 53 we thought competitive snaps. He completed I believe over 40 of them and he threw the ball well. Today, and again, it's a little different. I thought we missed a couple plays early. We had a couple opportunities for some big plays early that we didn't convert on, but, for a rookie quarterback, I think he is doing very well."

Expectations are high for Tannehill, who played at Texas A&M under Dolphins' offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and was the first quarterback drafted in the first round by the Dolphins since 1983. That doesn't mean he'll jump into the top job and begin a decade of dominance ala Dan Marino in '83.

Moore was solid as the starter last season and the 34-year-old Garrard, returning to football after not playing in 2011, has played in 86 games, including most of six seasons as a starter in Jacksonville.

"They come to work. They like the game," said Philbin on his quarterbacks. "They're willing to learn. They don't have all the answers. They practice hard. They study hard. I think they all have leadership qualities. They're all a little bit different guys, which is good, but they all have leadership qualities.

"They set a good example. These guys are professionals. Beyond that, we're kind of letting this training camp bring out the best in each one of them and hopefully we can see and come to a good decision as we move forward."
