The Denver Broncos didn't burn the entire Tim Tebow playbook after all. Yes that was Peyton Manning the Broncos' 37-year-old quarterback lined up in the pistol formation three times in seven plays in the Broncos' first preseason game Thursday night. Putting Manning in the pistol where he lines up in the shotgun formation with the tailback three yards directly behind him shows how the Broncos believe that formation isn't just for the young speedy quarterbacks like San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick or Seattle's Russell Wilson or even Tebow the former Broncos' starter. "Don't confuse the pistol with having to have a mobile quarterback" Broncos coach John Fox told USA TODAY Sports after practice on Saturday. The Broncos first used the pistol formation in 2011 running it for about 50 snaps when Tebow was their quarterback. When the Broncos signed Manning in March 2012 much of the offense designed for Tebow went on the shelf. There would be no read option for a veteran quarterback coming off four next surgeries and certainly no designed quarterback runs. Yet the pistol remained though the Broncos ran it just once last season — in the first quarter of the divisional playoff game against Baltimore in January. Knowshon Moreno took that handoff and ran straight up the middle for a three-yard gain. On Thursday against San Francisco the NFL team most associated with the pistol because of Kaepernick the Broncos used the pistol to both run the ball (two carries for Ronnie Hillman for six yards) and to pass (a 7-yard completion to Demaryius Thomas). "This is time for us to experiment. Time for us to expand" offensive coordinator Adam Gase told USA TODAY Sports. "If we see something that we like we'll investigate. We'll try it in practice." Gase the Broncos' first-year offensive coordinator knew that having Manning in the pistol generated some buzz after the preseason opener but said it wasn't worth "over analyzing at this point." But how could we not when the pistol is so widely associated with quarterbacks so different from Manning? "You've got to think outside the box sometimes. I'll give you that" Gase said.
