The Pittsburgh Steelers will meet with three free agents today according to Bob Labriola on Twitter. Arizona Cardinals free agent running back Larod-Stephens Howling and Houston Texans free agent offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell. They will also be meeting with former-Baltimore Ravens linebacker Tavares Gooden, who played for the San Francisco 49ers the past two seasons.
Gooden was considered to be one of the better linebackers in the 2008 NFL Draft, but his stock fell due to medical concerns. The Ravens drafted him in the third round that year and he only played in four games for the Ravens as a rookie. Despite his low-profile rookie season Gooden was pegged as the starter alongside Ray Lewis in 2009. However, injuries plagued his season and he only started 12 games recording 47 tackles.
In 2010 Gooden returned to a back-up role and was cut following the 2010 season. He signed on with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 and has been a back-up linebacker and special teams ace for the past two seasons. The Steelers are currently looking for depth behind Lawrence Timmons and Larry Foote and Gooden has starting experience in the 3-4 defense. He would also give the Steelers a veteran presence on special teams.
However, and this is purely speculation, it seems unlikely the Steelers will sign any of these players prior to the draft later this month. Instead it seems likely the team is trying to see who is available on the open market in case they aren’t able to adequately fill a hole in the draft and instead have to look to free agency.
