The Pittsburgh Steelers brought back tight end Matt Spaeth back on a one year deal. Spaeth was drafted by the Steelers in 2007 and was expected to be Heath Miller’s back-up and a possible threat in the passing game. However, behind Miller Spaeth didn’t get a ton of playing time and he left the Steelers in free agency in 2011. Spaeth played the last two seasons for the Chicago Bears. He has played in a total of 91 games during his six NFL seasons and has accumulated 49 receptions, 353 yards and eight touchdowns. The Steelers also just re-signed TE David Johnson so they will add Spaeth to Miller, Johnson, and 2012 seventh round pick David Paulson on the depth chart. Miller is recovering from a major knee injury suffered at the end of the 2012 season. There is some concern about when he will be able to return to the football field and the Steelers are trying to bolster the tight end position this off-season. The Steelers have resigned Spaeth and Johnson who should compete with Paulson for playing time. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley likes to use tight ends in his offense and having players to fill in for Miller if he is going to miss time is important. At this point there are no contract details available for Spaeth’s deal, but it isn’t expected to be any more than a veteran’s minimum deal. Although many fans see brining back Spaeth and corner back William Gay as steps back they are two players that the Steelers coaches liked and wanted to keep. Both Spaeth and Gay passed up offers from the Steelers in hopes of more money and more playing time elsewhere and the Steelers seem happy to have them back. Remember Spaeth as one time was expected to be a threat in the passing game and in 2011 Gay was one of the best players on the Steelers defense.
