In another shining example that playing in the NFL and owning a Heisman trophy doesn’t mean squat, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released 2006 Heisman winner QB Troy Smith.

This was Smith’s second NFL team since being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. He also played for the 49ers and most recently the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks.

The 27-year-old Smith signed a Reserve/Future contract with the team back in January. He played 20 games in his NFL career with eight career starts.

The once promising QB from Ohio State led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in 2006 before they were beaten by Florida 41-14 in the Bowl Championship Series title game. Smith threw 54 TD passes in his college career, third best at Ohio State.

Troy Smith experiment comes to an end; released by the Steelers

There was some buzz around Steeler Nation earlier this year when the Steelers signed journeyman QB Troy Smith to a reserve contract. That short lived experiment though came to an abrupt half on Monday as the team announced that they released him.  Smith signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Steelers on January 20, 2012. Prior to joining the Steelers, Smith spent time with the...

Why Troy Smith, Not Jerrod Johnson, Was Cut

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced yesterday that former Heisman winning quarterback Troy Smith was cut from the team. Smith was fighting for a back-up quarterback job behind Ben Roethlisberger. However, he was fighting an uphill battle from the beginning. Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich are still o ContinueThe post Why Troy Smith, Not Jerrod Johnson, Was Cut appeared first on SteelBlitz.

Steelers Release QB Troy Smith

Last week I speculated that the Pittsburgh Steelers would likely be releasing one of their five quarterbacks soon and Monday we got word that former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith has been released. The move now means that the Steelers have decided to take Jerrod Johnson to training camp with them as their fourth quarterback. Carrying five quarterbacks in camp was just not likely...

Steelers release Heisman winner Troy Smith

He has also spent time with the Omaha Nighthawks (2011) of the United Football League, the San Francisco 49ers (2010) and the Baltimore Ravens (2007-2009). The Ravens drafted him in the fifth round (174th...

Steelers release QB Troy Smith

The Steelers have released QB Troy Smith according to  The team was going to need to release one quarterback heading into camp.  Smith was the choice.  The Steelers could not have that many QB’s on the roster.  They barely have enough reps to go around for 3 quarterbacks, let alone five.  It would just be a waste of a roster spot to have all five on the...

Steelers release former Buckeye Troy Smith

Troy Smith is available again to any NFL team according to a Twitter post by @steelers. And so ends a strange (non) tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers for Troy Smith. It was just this past January when the Steelers signed the Clevelander and former Buckeye quarterback. A few days more than six months later, he has been cut. This is relatively meaningless from a Cleveland Browns...

Pittsburgh Steelers: Three Questions Heading into Training Camp

1. When will Mike Wallace report to training camp? This story is getting old real fast for Steelers fans. Mike Wallace still hasn’t signed his one-year tender, which would pay him $2.742 million in non-guaranteed base salary. Wallace’s teammates are optimistic that he’ll be there sooner rather than later however.   According to cornerback Ike Taylor, it’s only a matter of...

Time is Right for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Head Coach Mike Tomlin to Agree on a Contract Extension

About this time two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers ended building speculation and awarded head coach Mike Tomlin with a two-year contract extension through the 2013 season. That trend was nothing new for the Steelers, who have a history of negotiating extensions with their coaches at that point of their contracts; a tradition that started after former head coach Bill Cowher...
