Alan Faneca was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 26th pick in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft, in a draft that saw Peyton Manning go number one overall to the Indianapolis Colts, the Steelers found a long term starter during the back end of round one.
Faneca stepped into a starting role during his rookie season, and never let it slip away from him, starting for the Steelers for 10 years of his 13 year career. During those 10 years, he was elected to the Pro Bowl nine times, and is a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers 75th Anniversary Team, one that boasts many NFL all time greats.
Faneca is widely regarded as one of the best guards of this generation, and has a chance to land on the all time greats list, while not known for his pass blocking, especially during the end of his career, his run blocking was always dominant. The Steelers enjoyed a bountiful running attack during the years Faneca anchored the offensive line.
Faneca overcame epilepsy as a child to become a Pro Bowl guard, and has potential to see a bust of his head displayed in Canton, Ohio someday.
During his press conference, Faneca thanked multiple people, but perhaps the most important ones were his family. He recognized the sacrifice that not only he committed to, but them as well. He’ll now have plenty of years to spend time with his wife and children, and he’s certainly earned it.
It’s always a sad day when one of the greats retires, there’s a feeling of change around the league, where the new surpasses the old and the cycle begins anew. While Alan may not be playing anymore, younger players will always have the benefit of being able to pop in the tape and watch how one of the greats does it.
Alan, thank you for your contributions to not only the Pittsburgh Steelers, but to the NFL as a whole. You brought a mean streak onto the field every time you set foot on it, and the next generation of great run blockers will certainly benefit from your example. I wish you the best in your retirement, and truly hope that you and your family have many great, great years together.
