According to Stevenson Sylvester’s Twitter account as well as Bob Lanriola the Pittsburgh Steelers have resigned the inside linebacker to a one year deal. Sylvester has been a back-up linebacker and special teams player since entering the league in 2010 when the Steelers drafted him in the third round.
Last year Sylvester was expected to compete with Larry Foote for the starting job alongside Lawrence Timmons, but a knee injury cost him most off the off-season and some of the regular season as well.
Sylvester was a restricted free agent this off-season, but the Steelers chose not to tender him a contract. This was likely due to the fact that they knew they would be able to sign him back to a lesser-deal later in free agency which is likely what they have down. Although the details of his new deal are not yet available it would be surprising if he signed for anything more than the veteran minimum for a four year player.
2013 may be Sylvester’s last chance to break the ranks with the Steelers, but with Foote back on a three year deal he will need to show a lot of improvement to do that. However, in 2012 the Steelers used Sylvester some at outside linebacker in the pre-season so he has some versatility that would make him a solid back-up for years to come.
Even so, it is Sylvester’s goal to start for the Steelers and although their has been a lot of optimism surrounding him since entering the league as a fifth round pick things have never fallen into place for the 24 year old linebacker. If he can stay healthy this off-season he may, at the very least, see more playing time on defense in 2013 after playing only one defensive snap in 2012.
All of this, however, depends on his development and unless he shows huge strides during off-season activities and training camp he will likely be no more than a back-up linebacker once again. Also the Steelers are expected to draft an inside and outside linebacker later this month which adds more competition for Sylvester moving forward.
So far in his career Sylvester has played in 41 games and started one game for the Steelers. He has racked up 22 tackles and four forced fumbles all coming mainly on special teams plays. Moving forward he needs to improve on diagnosing plays and not over-pursing; if he can do that we may see more of him in 2013, but if not he may be no more than a back-up in Pittsburgh.
