Former Ohio State Heisman Trophy winning QB Troy Smith has been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith entered the league in the 2007 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth-round by the Baltimore Ravens. He played three seasons with the Ravens before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 and eventually played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL last season. Smith has appeared in 20 games during his NFL career and has eight starts.
The move to release Smith leaves the Steelers with four quarterbacks on their roster. Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and rookie Jerrod Johnson comprise the signal callers remaining.
Smith led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 12-0 season in 2006 but lost the national championship game to the University of Florida 41-14.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Troy Smith on Monday and thus opened up a spot on the 90 man roster. Five quarterbacks was one too many to take to training camp, so it is pretty safe to say that another quarterback will not be signed to fill that spot. With two long snappers, two kickers and two punters currently on the roster, I think we can rule out a specialist being...
Undrafted free agent punter Drew Butler likes his chances of beating out Jeremy Kapinos in training camp and he said as much in an interview last week on 680 The Fan.
Butler of course is the son of former Chicago Bears kicker Kevin Butler, who kicked for 13 seasons in the NFL. Drew, like his dad, played at the University of Georgia, where he won the Ray Guy Award in 2009.
One player that I will be watching closely this preseason is Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Mortty Ivy. Ivy, who was originally signed in 2009 as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia by the Carolina Panthers, is believed to be out of practice squad eligibility now after stints on the practice squads of the Panthers, Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams and the Steelers....
Today we continue on with our look at the training camp roster battles for the Pittsburgh Steelers by looking at the running back position. The two things we know for sure right now is that Isaac Redman is the starter and that Rashard Mendenhall is all but guaranteed to open the 2012 season on the PUP list, where he will not count against the 53 man roster.
In all likelihood the...
As the days before training camp come to a crawl, fans always have the solace of dissecting different positions and determining who the starters will be. Of course, one of the biggest questions facing the Pittsburgh Steelers is who will assume the mantle at inside linebacker after the release of veteran inside linebacker James Farrior at the start of the free agency period. The battleâ...
The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran quarterback Troy Smith, a former Ohio State star who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy.
Smith signed with the Steelers earlier this year. He has also spent time with the Omaha Nighthawks (2011) of the United Football League, the San Francisco 49ers (2010) and the Baltimore Ravens (2007-2009). The Ravens drafted him in the fifth round (174th...
With training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers now less than a month away, many sites similar to this one are breaking down some of the key position battles heading into the 2012 season. This is Part Two in my comparison of Pittsburgh Steelersâ Quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw and Ben Roethlisberger through the first eight seasons of their respective careers. Be sure to check out Part One which covered their playoff and Super Bowl numbers.
In Part Two, Iâm looking at not just the the regular season numbers for the two stars but also the intangibles as I did in Part...
In another shining example that playing in the NFL and owning a Heisman trophy doesnât mean squat, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released 2006 Heisman winner QB Troy Smith.
This was Smithâs second NFL team since being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. He also played for the 49ers and most recently the UFLâs...
The Steelers are going to have an all out battle on their hands at the left defensive end position during training camp. Fourth year player Ziggy Hood will take on second year player Cameron Heyward for the spot that has been held down by Aaron Smith for so many years. Both players have high expectations and are willing to put in the work. This will be a fun battle to watch...
Retired Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said the players gave NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to much control of player discipline in the collective bargaining agreement signed last year. "So Roger Goodell, even though a lot of players don't like having him in charge, the NFLPA, we signed off on the collective bargaining agreement," Ward told WFNZ radio in Charlotte...
One of the Steelers' prize undrafted rookie free agents, Robert Golden is coming off an impressive showing this spring in Pittsburgh. Dale Lolley has the details.
The Steelers released veteran quarterback Troy Smith, the team announced via its official Twitter feed. Smith had been listed fifth on the Steelers' QB depth chart behind Jerrod Johnson, Charlie Batch, Byron Leftwich and Ben Roethlisberger. Smith was a fifth-round pick from Ohio State and spent three seasons with the Ravens before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2010.
