The Pittsburgh Steelers are legendary for building their team through the NFL Draft. Year after year, after year, after year the Steelers let what seems to be a key contributor, a star player leave the Steelers Organization. Whether it be through Free Agency or Waivers, the Steelers always have a guy to step into the role and succeed for a player who has left the organization. In 2006 and most recently, Joey Porter was waived. A cap casualty. A very controversial release with the some of the coaches, the players and the fans. The heart and soul of the defense...gone! A major role in capturing "The One For The Thumb!" Released outright!! Enter - James Harrison - Pro-Bowl Season!! This is a regular thing with the Steelers, but my question arises... How are the Steelers building for the future? How have they done in the last 5 Drafts to ensure when Harrison is ready to walk, Joe Blow can step in... From 2003 to 2007, the Steelers have had a total of 38 picks ('03-5, '04-8, '05-8, '06-9, '07-8.) Of those 38 picks, 21% of those players (8) are starters on the team today. 29% are still on the roster as a back-up or special teams player. 16% have found a spot on another team. 34% are currently out of the league. ONLY 50% of the Players the Steelers drafted are currently on their roster...50%...
