The Pittsburgh Steelers will be meeting with three free agents this week. Based on the Steelers history they won’t be signing any of these players unless they agree to very cap friendly deals, but the Steelers are showing their concern with two areas of the team.
The first two players they are bringing in are middle linebackers which shows a concern with the depth behind Larry Foote and Lawrence Timmons. Stevenson Sylvester is not expected back at this point and Sean Spence, the Steelers 2012 third round pick, may never play football again because of a major knee injury.
Therefore the Steelers are expected to meet with Dan Connor and Moise Fokou. Both players are 27 years old and neither has held a full time starting position for an entire season so far in the NFL. Both players would be added purely as depth behind Foote and Timmons at this point with a chance to get playing time if they perform well in training camp.
As of now, however, the most promising young inside linebacker on the Steelers roster may be Brian Rolle. Rolle was signed to a futures contract earlier this off-season. He has played in 19 games over his two NFL seasons including starting 13 games for the Philadelphia Eagles as a rookie. Rolle is only 24 and could be a player the Steelers will try to mold into a starter of the future.
The other player the Steelers will be meeting with is quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals last season. Gradkowski has primarily been a back-up during his career, but has starting experience and could be a long-term back-up behind Ben Roethlisberger.
Gradkowski’s claim to fame as a back-up came against the Steelers in 2009 when he was a member of the Oakland Raiders. Gradkowski completed 20 of 33 passes for 308 yards and 3 touchdowns, including an 11-yard game winning touchdown in that game as the Raiders pulled a 27-24 upset of the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

As Pittsburgh Steelers fans wait to see what transpires to the Steelers roster during the offseason, and who gets picked in the draft, there will be much speculation to what might occur. The Steelers find themselves in a salary cap dilemma not easily fixable. Mainly, five Steelers hold the lion’s share of the cap money. They are Ben Roethlisberger, James Harrison, Lawrence Timmons...
The Pittsburgh Steelers continue on Tuesday with their yearly process of signing their own free agents as Bob Labriola reports on Twitter that fullback/tight end David Johnson has been re-signed to a one year contract. The deal is believed to be for the minimum.
Johnson, who was originally drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of 2009 draft, tore up his knee last year in...
Historically the Rooney family does not target the free agent market heavily. When they do, it is generally free agents which are picked to fill specific roles at a cheap price. Do not expect this off season to be much different considering Pittsburgh’s salary cap issues. While releasing James Harrison and others helps, they are still hindered and can’t go after quality free...
According to Rotoworld and Spotrac the Pittsburgh Steelers have released offensive lineman Willie Colon. Colon has played right tackle and left guard for the Steelers and is a very good run blocker. However, his last three seasons have ended on injured reserve and his cap number was too large for the Steelers to keep around.
The Steelers resigned Ramon Foster yesterday who will take...
We haven't heard much news regarding Pittsburgh Steelers free agent cornerback Keenan Lewis since the 2013 free agency signing period started on Tuesday, but on Wednesday Lewis posted on Twitter that he would be visiting the New Orleans Saints.
Lewis is from the New Orleans area and the Saints could definitely use some help in their secondary as they move to a 3-4 defense...
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been expected to make multiple cuts since the off-season started and Willie Colon has been expected to be one of those players. Even so, he is still on the roster currently, but he is expected to be released today. If the Steelers release Colon after June first they can save $5.5 million against the cap for the 2013 season.
The issue with a post-June...
The Steelers have been silent this offseason so far, except for the loss of Mike Wallace of course. They need to bring some veterans back while getting younger through the draft.
The Steelers ended up re-signing linebacker Larry Foote, who is a solid player that the Steelers could use as depth. He still has some gas in his tank.
Steelers deal with LB Larry Foote was 3 yr/$5.5...
According to Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer on Twitter, the Cleveland Browns haven't yet expressed interest in signing Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in a matter of a few hours.
This disputes an earlier report from over the weekend that stated the Browns indeed had interest in the Steelers 2009 third-round draft...
Happy New Year to all. The 2013 NFL league year is here.
Pittsburgh Steelers free agent running back Rashard Mendenhall has visits scheduled with the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN on Twitter.
The two teams are not surprising as both were reported to have interest in the Steelers former first round draft pick since the legal tampering...
A former Pittsburgh Steelers starting running back is expected to man that same position for the Arizona Cardinals.
Rashard Mendenhall has inked a one-year deal with the Cardinals. The news was reported Wednesday by his agent Mike McCarthy on Twitter (@MikeMcCartney7).
The signing came shortly after ex-Miami running back Reggie Bush signed a four-year contract with Detroit. The...
The most highly sought skill-position player in free agency has a new home.
Wide receiver Mike Wallace has agreed to contract terms with Miami, the NFL Network reported.
Although there is a weak class of free-agent wideouts in 2013, Wallace is considered a blue-chip player because of his speed, upside and age (26). Wallace has the most catches of 40-plus yards in the NFL since...
It is a one year deal for a team that desperately needed a consistent running back we will see if he can stay healthy.
And Cardinals reached an agreement in principle on a one-year deal with former Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall.
