The Jets are in rebuilding mode. Once the draft is over and camps start up, fans start looking to the season ahead, and wondering if their team has what it takes to get into the postseason. At the end of last season I didn’t think there was any way they were making the playoffs in 2013, but at that time John Idzik wasn’t in control. He has turned the team around more in the first few months than I thought anyone could, but a lot still needs to be done. I’ve heard a lot of people say the team is going to win 10 to 11 games, but I think that is a little high. Being realistic, I see the team winning 6 games. The team absolutely has a bright future, but they’re young right now and still need to develop. The tight end position scares me. The receiving corps is still very young, except for Santonio Holmes who is coming off a major injury. Two of the starting offensive linemen need to be replaced, yet I believe Brian Winters can step in right away and fill one of those spots. I do think the team is in good shape on the ground, with the acquisition of running backs Mike Goodson and Chris Ivory this offseason. (More after the jump...) On the defensive side of the ball, I’m not completely sold on the linebackers or the safeties. There isn’t a lot of experience at either of groups, and I think that could be a problem. The defensive line looks like the strong point of the team with the additions of Antonio Garay and Sheldon Richardson. The biggest question is the quarterback position. It's the most important position in the game and the Jets don’t have a clear #1 right now. Garrard is the veteran, but is injury prone, Sanchez has been a turnover machine since he joined the league, and Geno Smith is a rookie that needs developing. I think the team is too young and inexperienced to win their way into the playoffs this year. They have the potential to prove that there is a solid foundation to build on, but I don’t think they’ll be playoff ready. The team isn’t done rebuilding yet and they probably won’t be for a few more years. This year’s draft wasn’t to win now; it’s to build a better team for the future.
