This week, I thought I would move away from the past and look towards the future of our New York Jets. Last week's NFL Draft was full of surprises and always seems to leave us with more questions than answers. The Jets drafted two defensive players in the first round, but all anyone wants to talk about is their second round pick of quarterback, Geno Smith. Let me first say, that I happy that the Jets drafted a quarterback. The Mark Sanchez Experiment does not seem like it has anything left. As I write this article, he is still a member of the team and probably will be for the near future. I do believe that the Jets will move on sometime between now and the start of the season. It would be best for the team and I believe it would be best for Mark, as well. He would be able to go somewhere and be a solid backup, and in this league, a backup is usually needed and is usually loved by the fans. The Jets need to forget about the recent past, and find out some answers for the future. Geno Smith had a very solid college career for the University of West Virginia. He was projected to be an early first round pick in the draft. That projection proved to be wrong and he suffered through a long Thursday night at Radio City Music Hall. Without a doubt, he was frustrated and in some ways embarrassed. He would leave the building and tell reporters that he was going home and would not be there for the second round. You cannot blame him for feeling this way, and fortunately he realized that he should return the following night. After several more picks, he was chosen by the Jets with the 39th overall pick of the draft. Since the draft ended last weekend, Geno continues to be in the news. He fired his agent, after blaming him for his fall in the draft. He has made comments that he will be the starting quarterback and that the Jets will make the playoffs. Many people believe he is delusional and possible a “little nuts." They also believe that the New York media will have a field day reporting on him throughout the upcoming season.  I’m not saying that what he has been doing is correct or even rational, but as a long time Jets fan, I really hope that we give him a chance. He is still a young guy, who will make mistakes, and don’t we all? I don’t know if I would have drafted the same players this past weekend, but we need to analyze them after seeing them on the field. A great college career does not guarantee a great NFL career. But an unknown player does not guarantee a failure as well. I don’t know if I would have drafted Geno Smith as our future quarterback, but he is here now, and we need to surround him with players that will help him to be a success. It’s been a long time since we were in the ultimate game, the Super Bowl, but the events of last week may be the start of a bright and glorious future for our New York Jets. We can only hope...
