Pro bowl safety Eric Weddle returns to the Chargers healthier and faster than ever. After leading the team in interceptions(7) and third in tackles(88), Weddle intends to grow even further in success this season.

In an interview after OTA’s, Weddle stressed how much faster and stronger he and his secondary was performing.

Though Weddle has had an All-Pro performance, and possesses all the intangibles an organization seeks, Weddle hasn’t had a talented Strong Safety to compliment him in the back of the field.

The Chargers front office had taken notice to this, and looked to the draft and free agency for a solution. The guy I’m particularly pleased with is LSU Strong Safety Brandon Taylor. Chargers picked Taylor in the third round of the draft this offseason.

Though Taylor doesn’t have superior range or speed like Weddle, he does have great ball skills and a nose for the ball. Where he lacks in pure skill, he also compensates with great experience and playing time.

Being a three year starter in the SEC, Taylor has seen a multitude of play sets with players of a pro-like caliber. He has also been in big game situations with the Tigers. (SEC and BCS Championships)

The training he has had at LSU will transition him smoothly into what defensive coordinator John Pagano wants to do defensively. Because the Chargers are incredibly stacked in their front seven, Taylor won’t have to do anything too complicated as far as rushing the passer or shallow coverage. (Although I believe he is capable of it).

Atari Bigby will also contribute and share time with Taylor. Bigby was acquired through free-agency this offseason. Bigby is a big-hitter safety similar to Bob Sanders in his prime. Bigby will punish receivers in the middle and will be a help in the run game.

With Eric Weddle leading a ‘strong’ safety core, he will be able to make more plays and emerge into the star he is capable of being.
