Pre-Game Notes: All Eyes on Jimmy Smith

The Ravens first round pick cornerback Jimmy Smith will most likely see increased playing time in Friday’s game versus the Kansas City Chiefs.  Smith had a minor set back in training camp with a groin injury. But he should be up to speed, playing with the first defense. As described, “After playing eight snaps as a defensive reserve in the preseason opener, Smith has worked as a first-team cornerback along with Cary Williams.”

It will be great to see Smith on the field!

Things to watch:

  • Coverage skills (recovery speed):  We think of Smith as a physical big corner at 6-2, 210 pounds. Yet, Smith possesses speed as well (4.4′s, 40 speed). He has the skills to stick with receivers in coverage.  Being a rookie Smith may have a few plays where he gets beaten in coverage, but coaches want to see how fast he recovers and will look for his ability to finish the play.
  • Press Coverage (ability to disrupt the timing of receivers) Some scouts gave Smith the edge over the top cornerbacks in the draft as far his ability to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage.  In the NFL receivers are much more physical and Smith will have to adapt and match their strength.
  • Run Support/tackling: The ability to tackle in the NFL is crucial. Cornerbacks are the last line of defense and are counted on to help in run support. One attribute the Ravens liked in Smith is his willingness to support the run.
  • Reading Plays (recognition):  It might be a lot to ask a rookie in his first major role, yet, Smith will have to be aware of diagnosing the offensive play (run v.s pass).
