Widely expected to have a precipitous drop off in production after refusing to report to off-season workouts and training camp, Maurice Jones-Drew has pushed aside all of the critics and doubters through the first four weeks of the season, averaging nearly 4.9 yards per carry en route to 352 yards and one touchdown.

Jones-Drew recently spoke at length with Albert Breer at NFL.com, about his decision to hold out and the ramifications that came with it. The Pro Bowl running back was careful to not speak too specifically with regard to the possibility of another hold out in the future, but he did try to set the record straight as to his primary motivation for missing almost all of Jacksonville’s organized activities prior to the start of the season.

“This is one thing a lot of people didn’t get from the press conference, because it was all ‘Why’d I do it?,’ but the whole time I was away, I was making sure there would be no setbacks. I mean, I knew the decision I chose to make and I understood the consequences that came with it, I was gonna have to fight to get my job back and all those things. But when I got back, there were gonna be no excuses.”

– Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew

While avoiding OTAs and training camp practices, Jones-Drew stayed busy, pushing himself to get in the work he felt was necessary to prepare his body for the rigors of a 17 week season. He also spent time studying the Jaguars new playbook put together by first year head coach Mike Mularkey, doing his best to memorize the different terminology so he’d be ready to hit the ground running, literally and figuratively, on day one of his return.

Although he says his relationship with the team’s front office is fine, Jones-Drew isn’t backing down from his belief that he should be compensated on a greater level than his current contract calls for, and is comfortable in allowing his continued production on the field do the talking for him with regard to his negotiations with Jacksonville on a new deal.

Jones-Drew, 27, is now in his seventh NFL season, and has 7,206 yards and 63 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 291 receptions for 2,556 yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns.
