Looking to protect their retirement interests, former All-Pro Chiefs running back Priest Holmes and three other retired players sued the NFL on Monday, hoping to join the current players in their antitrust dispute against the league and halting the lockout.
Ex-players Obafemi Ayanbadejo, Ryan Collins and Hall of Fame defensive end Carl Eller are listed as plaintiffs in the 44-page complaint filed in federal court in Minneapolis.
The suit seeks class-action status on behalf of all retired or former NFL players who receive health, retirement or other benefits from the league or its subsidized plans, arguing those benefits will be jeopardized by the loss of NFL revenue in an extended lockout.
An attorney for the players says those benefits are not guaranteed if the expired collective bargaining agreement lasts for a year.
