Always a Bright Spot On days when the Seattle Seahawks‘ defense can’t even hold on (granted they are on the field for the majority of the game) and the offense is… well, being the Seahawks offense, the Special Teams unit helps out both units. Be it by giving the opposing offense awful starting field position, or Leon Washington electrifying the game with a stunning return, they’re a consistent bunch. 1. Leon Washington The man whom Seahawks’ radio play-by-play man once nominated for president (after the second of two return touchdowns against the Chargers). Despite the new kickoff rule limiting Washington’s returns, he has still come up big when it was needed. This year, a big punt return set up Russell Wilson’s winning touchdown against the Patriots.  Last season, a punt return touchdown gave the Seahawks the lead against the Browns before it was called off due to a very questionable block-in-the-back penalty.  And who could forget the three-kickoff-return-touchdown year of 2010; his first in Seattle. Oh yeah, he’s second all time in return touchdowns, too. Leon Washington for President! 2.  Heath Farwell Leon Washington for president! You can’t spell Seahawks Special Teams without the Pro-Bowl special teamer.  Nobody does it better or more consistently than the Seahawks captain when it comes to running down kicks/punts.  Not only did he lead the ‘Hawks in tackles last year on Special Teams, he also filled the huge hole vacated by a Matt McCoy ACL tear. Not Washington, not Jon Ryan’s ginger hair but Heath Farwell, is everything that is the Seahawks Special Teams. 3.  Michael Robinson    The other Special Team captain. For the second year in a row, Michael Robinson has taken the leadership role and led by example.  Robinson has stood out to me as a playmaker on Special Teams. Since becoming a key member of the unit, he has gotten the ball back for the offense on numerous teams, using outstanding speed for a 6’1″, 240-pound fullback.  He’s transformed from Big Ten Player of the Year as a quarterback to NFL Pro-Bowler as a fullback. To say this Seahawk is special is an understatement! 4.  Jon Ryan The unsung hero of an elite defense.  Ryan gives the opposing offenses a long field time and time again.  He led the league in punts downed inside the 20 last season, and had booted four straight 60-plus-yard punts earlier this season. He can do it all as far as punting goes, and Seahawks fans wouldn’t trade our favorite Canadian for anything! He also used to have a wicked mustache, so that helps. 5.  Steven Hauschka The unsung hero of an offense that leaves something to desire.  The 49ers’ David Akers led the league in points scored last year and set the NFL record for most field goals in a season mostly because of a lackluster 49er offense. Steven Hauschka has been the offense’s savior this year as far as that goes, salvaging three points out of disappointing drives time and time again. Maybe, just maybe, one day I could do a 5 Special Offensive Players.  A man can dream, can’t he? Go Hawks.
