This weeks Water Cooler features Brandon Hess and Bradley Gelber Manny Lawson comes to Buffalo after playing for Cincinnati and San Francisco. (courtesy YNN Buffalo) Who’s to blame that Buddy Nix had his conversation exposed online and what’s the significance? Brandon Hess: Honestly I believe this could have happened to many GM’s in the league, it just looks worse for Buddy Nix because it adds to the laundry list of embarrassing things that continues to happen to this organization. What’s your reaction to the Bills cutting Ryan Fitzpatrick? Hess: Did anyone ever think that Fitzpatrick was the answer at quarterback for this franchise? I’m not sure who is, but Ryan’s departure was inevitable.  He’ll make a serviceable backup somewhere, but honestly good riddance. Bradley Gelber: Not surprised, but just like we talked about with Lindy you still feel for the guy on a personal level. A lot of what transpired wasn’t only Fitz’s fault. There’s no way the Bills should have given him the six-year, $62 million contract that they did to begin with. From the “Fitz Scream” to helping guys like Stevie Johnson develop I’m sure he’ll be missed in the locker room, but he just lacked the physical tools to get it done as a starter. He’ll end up as a back up somewhere. After cutting Fitzpatrick, does this mean the Bills will select a quarterback at #8 overall? Hess: With Alex Smith having already been traded, Matt Flynn and Nick Foles unlikely to be moved it appears the draft is the only place for Buffalo to land a QB.  Unfortunately there’s no quarterback truly worthy of a top 10 pick this year, but the Bills might have to reach for one out of fear that he won’t be there in the second round. Gelber: I think it certainly increases the likelihood. Like I said this wasn’t a surprise. Fitz was clear in his final interview that he knew this was coming so I’d like to think the Bills had a plan in place for a while now. I think there’s a sense of panic for fans when you look at the current roster and see Tavaris Jackson as your starting QB. Whether it’s drafting a guy outside of the first round like Nassib & bringing in another veteran QB to compete with T-Jax to backup, or just taking a guy at no. 8 I think we’ll see a few moves in the QB area before the season. Thoughts on the Bills signing Manny Lawson? Hess: I like the signing.  Manny won’t set the world on fire, but the Bills need to load up at linebacker and Manny will be one of many additions as Mike Pettine assembles a rotation for his new look defense. Gelber: I like it as a depth move since he’s athletically gifted & versatile which will allow him to play in the Bills’ various defensive fronts. He’s also solid in the run game and this will probably send Bradham back to the weak side. While he never reached his potential in SF or Cinci I think he just needs to find the right system that fits him. Overall I think it’s a solid move. How do you feel about the Bills taking the quiet approach so far in free agency? Hess: Being quiet and being inactive are two different things. Quiet isn’t necessarily bad, but allowing both Levitre and now Rinehart to leave via free agency has put the Bills behind the 8 ball. They’ll need to make a move to land a veteran guard or two in order to cobble together an offensive line. Gelber: What’s new? Last offseason was certainly loud and crazy, but aside from that when have the Bills been a headline grabber? I could care less if they’re making the news early on or not as long as they fill the needs of this team before the season starts. If we’re quiet and go into the season with no LG & T-Jax as our starting QB that’s one thing, but if we’re patient draft the right guys and sign FA’s that make sense down the road than hakuna matata.     The post QCS Buffalo Water Cooler: Bills Free Agency Edition appeared first on Queen City Sports.

Manny Lawson Didn’t Know What He’s Getting Himself Into In Buffalo

It’s not as though linebacker Manny Lawson hasn’t experienced his share of losing in his NFL career. After being drafted in the first round by the 49ers in 2006 draft, he spent five less-than-triumphant seasons in San Francisco before departing just as Jim Harbaugh arrived to turn the franchise back into a contender. He has, however, spent the last two years in Cincinnati, a...

Are the Buffalo Bills Winning or Losing Free Agency?

The NFL’s offseason has grown in magnitude to the point where it is an event bigger than most (every?) other sports’ regular season. Do you know who leads the NHL in goals? Unless you’re reading this from Canada, probably not. But we all know that the 34th receiver in yards last year just signed with the Dolphins. The NFL has pulled off this wonderful magic trick that allows...

Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo Bills Player Profile Height/Weight: 6-1/215 Birthdate: 2/20/1981 School: COE FANTASY FOOTBALL ANALYSIS Before the Bills started losing all of their good offensive lineman to free agency, I would have endorsed Fred Jackson as a possible flex option or lower end RB3 but now I’m not so sure. I like Jackson, and if he would have just stayed healthy either...

Patriots Sign Former Bills WR Donald Jones

The New England Patriots after starting slowly like they always do are now heating up in the free agent market and have inked former Buffalo Bills WR Donald Jones to a contract.  Jones was a restricted free agent but Buffalo failed to tender him so New England will not lose a draft pick for him. Jones is 25 years old, 6’ and 208 lbs and was undrafted out of Youngstown State...

Buffalo Bills Great Andre Reed Interview

Ryan Fitzpatrick prepared to 'swallow my pride,' take backup role

A year and a half ago, the Buffalo Bills handed Ryan Fitzpatrick a big ol' contract extension, giving him the keys to take the wheel and fully own the offense.Early in the 2013 offseason, Fitzpatrick would just be happy for a team to let him in the back seat. The potential the Bills thought they had in the journeyman signal-caller never materialized, and Buffalo's new regime...

Manny Lawson signed with Buffalo Bills, was not aware of how bad they have been

Manny Lawson did not exactly do his research before signing with the Buffalo Bills. The former first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers signed a four-year, $12 million deal with the Bills on Wednesday. He made it pretty clear at his press conference that his decision to sign really was about the money. How do we know? He said he had no idea the Bills have gone 13 straight seasons...

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Buffalo Bills Pre-Draft Strategy

2012 Season SummaryThe Buffalo Bills had a disappointing 2012 season. Hell, let's be honest, Buffalo has been disappointing since the start of this century. Since 2000 they are a combined 82-126 with only one winning season (2004 they had a 9-7 record), and no playoff appearances since 1999.At the start of the 2012 season expectations were high. Buffalo improved from a dastardly...

How Does Manny Lawson Fit into the Buffalo Bills Defense?

The Bills made their first splash (any time you sign a player in free agency, it’s always a SPLASH) of the 2013 NFL offseason by bringing in LB Manny Lawson, leaving the Buffalo Bills Tank Tyler away from having each member of the 2005 NC State Defensive line under contract at some point or another. Speaking of which, I wonder if Mario Williams had anything to do with signing....

Pranksters who recorded Buddy Nix-Mark Dominik phone call may have committed a felony

You probably have heard that a couple of kids, with a little luck and a lot of chutzpah, were able to merge two separate phone calls involving Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik. They then recorded the conversation between Nix and Dominik, which was later revealed on Deadspin. Sounds like some pretty complicated and hi-tech stuff right? Actually,...
