Quarterback One: Minshew or AOC?
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

One of the revolving questions surrounding the Las Vegas Raiders is who will be the starting quarterback, Gardner Minshew or Aidan O’ Connell?

Comparing Quarterbacks

In free agency, Minshew was signed to a two year, 25 million dollar contract with 15 million of that guaranteed. Minshew is coming off of a season where he was the expected backup quarterback to then rookie, Anthony Richardson but assumed the starting role when Richardson was injured.

2023 saw him throw for 3305 yards and for 15 touchdowns with a 90.9 quarterback rating. His nine interceptions are not among the highest in the NFL because Sam Howell threw 21 interceptions in the same season.

O’Connell was drafted in the fourth round by the previous regime with Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler. Jimmy Garropolo was the starter opening night, but it became apparent that the Raiders needed a new quarterback going forward.

Last season, his stats are a fraction of Minshew’s with 2207 passing yards and only 12 touchdowns thrown. Takeaways included seven interceptions with a 89.7 quarterback rating.

Longevity could side more with O’ Connell being that he was born in 1998 and going into his second season. Mobility sides more with Minshew as he is seen as more of a rushing threat in comparison.

It is apparent Vegas was scouting for a quarterback during the NFL Draft as there were many rumors of trading up. Unfortunately for the Raiders, six quarterbacks were drafted before pick number thirteen arrived.

Training camp will be telling of who the starter for this upcoming season will be, but it does not rule out drafting a new quarterback next season.
