Trent Williams is a 6′5 310 lb offensive tackle for the Washington Redskins. He will be replacing longtime tackle Chris Samuels. Williams was selected for his quick feet and and ability to get upfield. According to combine results, Williams was not as strong as many scouts would have liked him. That may be an area of concern for the Washington Redskins, but they will no longer employ the same “Hog” style blocking scheme of a power running attack. Playing in Mike Shanahan’s system, he will be able to make use of his 4.8/40 speed and will be nimble enough to protect Donovan McNabb’s blind side. Off the field and attitude issues may have been a concern, but with veteran presence and strict coaching should whip him into shape.
Physically he is everything you want in a tackle. He has great height, and long arms. He has a great hand punch and will be great at engaging at the line of scrimmage. His short range explosion and ability to get him in the second level will be vital in the running attack. You would think he is excellent in the run game, but that is actually one area where he needs to improve. In summary, the Redskins made a fine pick, but Williams is far from being refined. He still needs some work, but I think he will be a good one.
