After Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Quincy Black's violent helmet-to-helmet collision with Ryan Mathews last November, head coach Greg Schiano's hope was that the neck injury would not be career-threatening.
Three months and one surgery later, Black's future with the Bucs and the NFL remains in doubt.
"You generally like to walk out of any surgery and say that it was a successful surgery, but the reality is, that because of the nerve damage and the nerve grafting and everything, you won't know if it's successful or not for several months," general manager Mark Dominik told the Tampa Tribune on Thursday.
"It's a tough injury and a unique injury and ... it's hard for us to have any timetable or feel for it."
Dominik has already begun making contingency plans, as Black is expected to miss "most, if not all, of training camp and the 2013 season."
If the Bucs opt to release Black to save $5.5 million in salary, the linebacker becomes eligible for a $1 million insurance payment this year and $500,000 in 2014.

LeGarrette Blount took the league by storm his rookie season after breaking 1,000 yards rushing in just 13 games. Last season, just two years after his rookie campaign, Blount found himself sitting on the bench and barely sniffing the field. Much of the reason why Blount rarely saw the field was because Doug Martin was unstoppable in 2012. Martin was even named to the Pro Bowl...
Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik announced today that the team will not use a franchise or transition tag on any player, including defensive end Michael Bennett. Instead, they appear to be giving the starting spot to Da’Quan Bowers. “Da’Quan is a guy I thought continued to accelerate his play throughout the end of the season,” Dominik said via the Tampa Bay Times...
If you have followed the Buccaneers the past few seasons, you would see why Josh Freeman is one of the most talked about player in pewter and red. On Thursday, Bucs general manager Mark Dominik told the Tampa Bay Times that the future of the six-year linebacker, taken out of New Mexico in the third round 68th overall in the 2007 draft, is questionable after the player underwent nerve graft surgery at the end of January. Dominik said it...
At the conclusion of the 2012 regular season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie head coach Greg Schiano didn’t sound too convinced that Josh Freeman would be the long term answer at quarterback for the club. The team stated that they would not extend his contract as he heads into the final year of his rookie deal. On Thursday, Schiano changed his tune a bit, claiming that he believes...

FANTASY FOOTBALL ANALYSIS
Statistically speaking fantasy football wise, Josh Freeman had his best year yet in the NFL during 2012. The problem is that the NFL is not fantasy football and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not going to sit back and hope that he continues...
Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano made waves after the season when he suggested his 25-year-old starting quarterback would face competition under center next season. Asked at the time if he was "all-in" on Josh Freeman, Schiano simply said, "I'm not side-stepping you, but I need to evaluate."
Two months later -- and with the game film reviewed -- Schiano was...
It could be a glimpse of more to come. Dominik could keep him off the...
