Romeo was huge [this past week] — he was kind of that steady rock. In the midst of everything, he obviously witnessed it so he knew he had to put it on himself to not only communicate what happened, but at the same time, lead us because there was going to be so much emotion involved — a lot of guys searching, seeing how they should respond. He was obviously emotional, and rightfully so. After that, he was able to be that steady force on this team. – Former Cleveland Browns quarterback on head coach Romeo Crennel, Wednesday, via conference call. Crennel had been largely criticized for having lost the locker room in the wake of the 2008 collapse when both men were with the Cleveland Browns. “You have to be willing to climb to get a higher vantage point,” added the quarterback when talking about dealing with adversity throughout his career. Crennel credits his parents’ strength helped him get through last week’s tragedy. [Related: TV Review: “Road Tested” entertaining, unfocused, and effective]

Report: Mike Lombardi “a strong frontrunner” for Browns GM position

This time it comes from longtime Pro Football Weekly editor Hub Arkush, as respected a name as there is in the business, who’s hit all the big Cleveland news outlets with his report. Per Tony Grossi, Arkush says: “We have it confidentially from very good sources close to the story that Mike [Lombardi] is a strong front-runner for the job. If you work (your) way backwards you’ll...

Browns GM Tom Heckert May Stay On After Season

Browns GM Tom Heckert has a chance to stay as the team’s GM after the season, per Fox. Rumors abound as to whether or not Michael Lombardi will take Heckert’s job. “There’s really not a lot of substance to the conversation,” Lombardi said. “There’s just a lot of rumors and innuendos. There’s really nothing to it.” Heckert was part of the staff that drafted key contributors...

Joe Thomas’ Peyton Hillis comments just felt like the truth

I was glancing through the headlines yesterday and today of all the places covering Joe Thomas’ comments on Peyton Hillis and something just didn’t sit right with me. ESPN said Joe Thomas “blasts” Peyton Hillis. Dawgs By Nature said that Thomas “Rips Into” Peyton Hillis. ESPN Cleveland said Thomas “tees off” on Peyton Hillis. This is not to criticize any of these...

Chiefs trying to cope with murder-suicide

BEREA -- There is no road map for some things. So it was last weekend when Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel found himself talking to linebacker Jovan Belcher as Belcher held a gun to his head outside the team facility. Belcher had just shot and killed his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his child. Belcher heard Crennels words, then went behind a car and killed himself...

Browns' Thomas rips former teammate Peyton Hillis

Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas called former teammate Peyton Hillis ''a terrible distraction'' last season, and said the running back put his contract situation ahead of the team. Hillis is returning to play in Cleveland this week with the Kansas City Chiefs. Thomas unloaded Wednesday on Hillis, saying he didn't always play hard and called his time with the...

Browns’ rookie trio on verge of very rare feat

After what seemed like years of spending high draft picks on the defensive side of the ball, the Browns focused on the offense this past April. RB Trent Richardson came off the board first, a pick higher than the Browns even had going into the draft. At number twenty-two in the first round the Browns grabbed QB Brandon Weeden. RT Mitchell Schwartz was the pick in round number two...
