Many Oakland Raiders fans are going to be upset with me for saying this, but no, there will not be an open quarterback competition in training camp. I’ve been saying this ever since the Raiders drafted Derek Carr but people have their hopes. Head coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie have both said that they see Matt Schaub as the starter and would like to see Carr sit for a year or two before he sees game action. Now, could Carr surprise people and overcome Schaub? Sure. But it will take a while, much like it did last season when Terrelle Pryor eventually overcame Matt Flynn. The Raiders are going to give Schaub every chance to win the job. If Carr does very well in training camp, he will then need to carry that into the preseason and truly impress in game action there to have any chance of winning the job. And even if Carr does impress through camp and the preseason, if Schaub looks good as well, Carr likely still will not win the starting job. But despite all of that, the QB position will be one of the most interesting story lines in camp. From questions about whether or not Schaub has anything left to questions about whether or not Carr could truly be the man of the future to questions about where forgotten man Matt McGloin fits into the whole scenario, one thing is for sure, this will be a position group worth paying close attention to.
