Raiders could be on track to get much needed news regarding a variable that should massively help the offense

For a team that has dealt with some pretty unfortunate injuries to start the season, the Las Vegas Raiders could be on track to get TE Michael Mayer back.

"So, we're getting ready for this thing," head coach Pete Carroll told reporters in his opening statement Wednesday. "I know you're going to ask some questions about injuries and all that. We still don't know about Michael Mayer. We'll figure that out during the course of the week. He's still clearing, getting cleared, and Kolton [Miller] had a high ankle sprain, and so that's what we're dealing with. And so, you saw what we've done with that."

Mayer, who missed last weeks loss against the Chicago Bears with a concussion, was limited in practice on Wednesday's injury report. He will be able to help improve the offense if he is back.

The Raiders need TE Michael Mayer back

Mayer won't fix every issue that the offense has, but he will certainly help. Yes, he did play in Weeks 1-3, and the offense wasn't great in any of those games, outside of the win over the New England Patriots. However, now that Jackson Powers-Johnson is back, the run game looked pretty good. Sure, the 64-yard touchdown kind of inflates the stats a bit, but he still had big chunk yardage in that game. Ashton Jeanty was great.

But Mayer is the much better run blocker than Brock Bowers is. When Mayer is back and Chip Kelly gets his team into a 12-personnel formation with two tight ends, you can bet your biscuit they will be running the ball to Mayer's side more than Bowers.

And let's not forget the weapon that Mayer is. He was drafted early in the second round for a reason, and in college, you could say that he and Bowers were the two best tight ends in college football. Mayer is absolutely a guy who gets open with ease and can sit in a zone because he's pretty good at reading defenses.

The Raiders just need more guys to get open, and now they'll have another one, plus a guy who can run block. But, he's still got to clear this week before he can play, and they will need him against a good Indianapolis Colts team.
