Wimbley, an all-around defender and pass rusher supposedly on the decline, has turned heads in Raiders camp with his strong play in practice. He punctuated his training camp surge with a four-sack performance in the first half of Oakland's 32-17 exhibition win over Chicago last Saturday.
"I'm just happy we got him," Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable told the Contra Costa Times of Wimbley, who was acquired from the Browns in March in exchange for a third-round draft pick. "I'm glad they didn't want him, if that's the case, and he's ours."
Wimbley, a former first-round pick, admitted he was surprised when he learned the Browns were trading him. But once he overcame the shock, he was determined to make the best of it with a new organization.
