Just when it looked like another franchise tag was in order along comes news that the Raiders have signed Richard Seymour to a two-year deal. According to Sports Illustrated the deal is worth $30-million, $22-million of which is guaranteed.
While the numbers are very similar to what he would have received under the stipulations of the franchise tag, this deal brings to an end Seymour’s three years in contract limbo. When the Raiders parted ways with a first round pick they had visions of Seymour leading the Raider revival. In 2010 they saw that vision begin to take shape.
The good news is that with Seymour taken care of the tag can now be applied to Zach Miller should a long term deal not be reached with the All-Pro tight end. With Nnamdi Asomugha unable to be tagged, there is still plenty of work to be done in order to keep the defense together.
Having stated he’s like to retire as a Raider, Seymour finally has a deal in place that will aide in making that desire a reality.
