It’s just preseason

NFL.com Highlights >

That was the negative chorus heard around Century Link Field Thursday night after the Seahawks beat the Oakland Raiders 21-3 to advance to a perfect 4-0 in preseason action.

The only other time in Seattle history the team has gone 4-0 was 2009, Jim Mora’s first (and thankfully only) season at the helm.

We all know how that year ended.  But worry not, 12′s; this year’s team is light-years ahead of the ’09 squad.

In a dominating performance, one player from all three phases of the game really impressed; here they are:

Offensive Game Ball

In my piece yesterday, I wrote that Kregg Lumpkin needed to impress to try and keep a spot on the team.  He didn’t not impress, putting up 71 yards rushing as well as another 10 through the air.

When I wrote that, it was assuming that Marshawn Lynch, Robert Turbin and Leon Washington were locks and Vai Taua would return for another year on the practice squad.

He changed that this evening.

What a game for the backup fullback/halfback.  He put up 49 yards on the ground on only nine carries, including a two yard touchdown scamper.  Taua also caught five passes for 39 yards.

He may have forced Pete Carroll’s hand to keep five running backs on the active roster, and made Lumpkin, a very talented running back, expendable.  He also earns the final offensive game ball for the 2012 preseason!

Matt Flynn also proved himself to be a very dependable backup, as well as a formidable starter, as he threw for 102 yards and a touchdown.

A very big weight off Seahawk fans shoulders with Tarvaris Jackson now in Buffalo.

Defensive Game Ball

Bubble linebacker Allen Bradford paced the defense with four tackles, and showed vast improvement in his all around game, but it’s too little too late for the running back turned linebacker.  Impressive preseasons by Mike Morgan, Heath Farwell and Kyle Knox make it even tougher.

Finally.  Finally, finally, finally!  First round pick Bruce Irvin finally broke through and sacked a quarterback.  He’s already been an impact player, but it’s nice to see him finally get on the stat sheet.  May this be the first of many!

This kid really wants to make the team.  That is the thought that’s been in my head since week one when Mike Morgan is on the field.  He’s flying around the field and making plays.

Exactly what you want to see from a bubble player.  Despite only registering one tackle, he also got to the quarterback for the second straight week and looks like he could be a reliable backup this year.

He also earns the final defensive game ball of 2012′s preseason.

Good job, Mike!

Special Teams Game Ball

Steven Hauschka missed his second field goal of the preseason, but nailed two.  He also missed an extra point (yikes!).  Not too concerning, and it should be another solid year for Hauschka.

Not an impressive night for the return team either, but Leon Washington didn’t get any touches back there, so it’s not telling.

This special team’s game ball goes to the punter, Jon Ryan.  One of the most underrated parts of an elite defense is the field position in which the opposing offense starts at.  That’s where the Canadian Ryan comes in.

He was at it again this evening, including a 57 yard boot.  Good job Jon, and keep it up.

The real games start Just 9 short days, in Arizona.

Go Seahawks!

  • Matt Flynn – 11/13 102 Yds 1 TD
  • Russell Wilson – 5/11 72 Yds
  • K. Lumpkin – 20 carries 71 yards 3.6 YPC
  • V. Taua – 9 carries 49 yards 5.4 YPC 1 TD, 9 receptions 39 yards 7.8 YPR
  • K. Durham – 1 reception 25 yards
  • S. Rice – 1 reception 22 yards
  • R. Lockette – 2 receptions 15 yards

Bradford led the Seahawks on D with 5 tackles. Malcolm Smith had 4. Bruce Irvin had 3 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.
