Raiders Waive Veteran RB Michael Bennett, Sign Giordano

According to the SFGate.com, the Oakland Raiders released Michael Bennett on Monday. The move created space for the team to add former Cal safety Matt Giordano to their roster, who will surely have a far greater impact in 2011-12 than Bennett would have had. At worst, Giordano would provide the Raiders with depth at safety and special teams. In seven games last season, Bennett had two carries for 11 yards. His impact was minimal, leaving me wondering why head coach Hue Jackson didn’t cut him earlier. But Jackson eventually came to his senses and cut the 33-year-old running back. Raiders rookie Taiwan Jones looked shifty enough in the preseason to warrant him becoming the team’s third-string running back. His explosiveness and speed will cause defenses havoc, especially if he and McFadden are packaged together in a “wildcat” scheme.
