The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to play a 3-5 St. Louis Rams team with a battered offensive line and an aging running back, Steven Jackson. Still, to hear 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh tell it, he's not overconfident heading into the Sunday game to Candlestick Park. "They present all kind of problems along the (defensive) front, the linebackers. (They are) very good in the secondary," Harbaugh said of the Rams. "You're worried, you're nervous." While he didn't say it, Harbaugh also might be concerned about circumstances. This is only the second game the 49ers will play in 24 days. Rust could be a factor, as could the looming Monday night game against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 19. The Rams also present legitimate problems. They added speed in their wide receiver corps. Quarterback Sam Bradford is a natural thrower, and the team became tougher with the additions of cornerback Cortland Finnegan and guard Harvey Dahl. Both players are known for...

LaMichael James will finally get his chance to shine this week

49ers coaches work “daily” with rookie RB LaMichael James on handling punt returns. Frank Gore ranks in the top-five in the NFL in yards per carry and is signed through 2014 while Kendall Hunter is entrenched as the backup. With Ted Ginn due to reach free agency in 2013, James’ future could be returning punts and functioning as a change-of-pace back. He’s yet to be active...

QB Smith threw TD with blurred vision

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith threw a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of Sunday's 24-24 tie against the Rams while playing with blurred vision before coming out with a concussion. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Smith connected with Michael Crabtree six plays after he began experiencing blurred vision on a 1-yard keeper early in the second quarter...

49ers RB Gore loves big holes created by O-line

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer Frank Gore looks at his three 100-yard rushing performances, four touchdowns and overall output in the season's first half and is quick to praise an unheralded offensive line that's helping him do it. Helping San Francisco's entire offense shine, too. These big boys block all over the...

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers: Week 10 NFL Pick

St. Louis Rams (3-5) at San Francisco 49ers (6-2) The rule of thumb in NFC West divisional matchups is to always take the home team. Since 2007, the NFC West is 104-77 in general at home and they have not only the best ATS winning percentage of any division in football in that time period, they also have the winning home/road winning ATS percentage disparity of any division in football...

Rams know challenge of facing San Francisco defense

There is no mystery when the tape goes on and teams watch their opponent in preparation for that week's game. So it is that the Rams will face a team as physical as there is in the NFL when they travel to San Francisco Sunday. The 49ers have won 11 consecutive division games at home, and this season in two division wins over Seattle (home) and Arizona (road) they have allowed...

Rams-49ers Preview

JEFF BARTL STATS Writer The San Francisco 49ers' stellar defense is a major reason they enter the second half of the season in control of the NFC West, at times overshadowing an offense possessing an efficient quarterback and the NFL's best running game. Alex Smith, Frank Gore and the rest of the 49ers' offense look to take advantage of a St. Louis Rams team that hasn...

Rams' scoring woes too large to ignore

ST. LOUIS It has become the beast in the basement. It's too large to ignore, too heavy to show the door. Got a convention hall? The St. Louis Rams could use a place to put their elephant in the room. There's no other way to say it: The Rams struggle to find the end zone. Touchdowns have been as easy as root canals for this group of late, and the competition won't...
