Randall Cobb had 9 targets last week, all of them resulting in a catch. Add to that the 75 yard touchdown run and the snaps that he saw in the backfield and you’ve got yourself a pretty intriguing option for tonight. Especially when you consider that Greg Jennings is listed as doubtful.

The problem, as always with the Packers, is the plethora of options at Aaron Rodgers disposal. Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jermichael Finley, Old Man Driver; they all threaten to take targets and production away from Cobb. But the rhythm and timing he showed with Rodgers last week can’t be ignored.

During the first part of the game it seemed the Packers were living up to their promise of getting Jermichael Finley more involved in the offense. Then Finley showed everybody why he fell out of favor in the first place when he dropped two balls. The San Francisco defense was swarming and it seemed like Aaron Rodgers couldn’t do anything he wanted, except get the ball to Randall Cobb.

When asked about Cobb’s expanded role, Coach Mike McCarthy had this to say:

“Randall was very productive with his opportunity, exciting player with the ball in his hands, and that’s the theory on getting him in the backfield.”

Translation: Cedric Benson looked old as **** and Randall Cobb is dynamic enough to give us an option back there that can actually do something productive.

Should you expect 10 carries a game? No, but there’s  no reason he can’t get 2-4 and give you some Percy Harvin esque rushing stats.

With Jennings out, you can expect Jordy Nelson to receive a lot of attention, not that he had a great game last week, but he’s still clearly the best receiver on the team besides Jennings. James Jones has a tendency to drop the ball a lot and we already know about Finley’s problems. That leaves Donald Driver as the only other viable option outside of Cobb, and in my opinion Driver’s boat sailed last year.

If you’re feeling squirrely, and you’ve got one of the many receivers that are dinged up this week and in danger of not playing, then Randall Cobb has some of the highest upside out there. More so than Ogletree, Stephen Hill or any of the other high profile waiver pick ups, Cobb will get the touches and targets that you can bank on in a high powered offense such as the Packers.
