Randy Fichtner can help himself land the offensive coordinator job for the Steelers this week at the Pro Bowl.  What?!?!  Crazy you say.  He is not even involved in the game.  I know I will be able to make my decision by what I see at the Pro Bowl.  Fichtner can not win the job there but in my eyes he can lose it.

Fichtner will be spending the week with Ben Roethlisberger at the Pro Bowl.  He and Bruce Arians will be guests of Roethlisberger at the game as a gift from Big Ben.  They will be spending all week together.  They will be golfing and pool side and whatever else they do at the Pro Bowl.  That means he will be there and will have influence on what Roethlisberger does.

Roethlisberger plans to play in the Pro Bowl.  He is making a selfish move.  He could not even walk two weeks ago in the game.  Now he is going to play in a scrimmage game that means nothing at all.  A game where guys do not block, try hard or even pretend like the game is going on.  He is a sitting duck against any defensive lineman in the game.  Roethlisberger’s ankle is not expected to heal until April.  That means he will not be 100% for this game.  He should not be playing in this game at all.  It is not worth the risk of more injury.  Especially if it could lead to surgery just like Maurkice Pouncey.

Fichtner should be in Roethlisberger’s ear all week.  He should be pushing him not to play.  If he wants the authority of the offense of the Pittsburgh Steelers this is his chance to make a statement.  He should tell Roethlisberger that it is in his best interest not to play.  He should demand it as his coach.  If Roethlisberger can not be talked out of playing by Fichtner his name should be removed from the list of candidates for the job.  If he can’t control him in an exhibition how is he going to control him in the heat of the moment.

It could go a long way in the other direction as well though to.  If Fichtner can talk Roethlisberger out of playing he could show the organization that he has a handle on the situation and may be able to be the guy for the team.  This is a big week for Fichtner and for Roethlisberger.  If he wants Fichtner as coach he will not play this week.

If Roethlisberger plays one play in the Pro Bowl Randy Fichtner is out in my book for Offensive Coordinator.
