The result of Thursday Night Football — a 26-23 loss to the Titans — stunned many (if not all) Steelers fans, including those who brought their Terrible Towels to the Music City.

Understandably upset, some of Steeler Nation took to their social media platforms to vent about the team’s lackluster showing.

That didn’t sit too well with running back Rashard Mendenhall, who fired back via Twitter, angrily drawing the line between fan and non-fan.

 

 

Thanks for clarifying, Rashard.

He didn’t say what prompted this retort, but Mendenhall was heavily criticized for a poor outing — six yards on six carries and an early exit due to injury.

While it’s unfair to blame Mendenhall for hurting his Achilles’ tendon, an injury not believed to be serious, fans have every right to question the team’s plodding ground game and surprisingly susceptible defense. Especially fans as loyal as Pittsburgh’s, who regularly travel all over the country, investing countless amounts of time, money, and energy to keep up with the club.

For an organization with Super Bowl aspirations, the Steelers sure didn’t look the part against the Titans, an inferior opponent by all accounts. As such, they got a virtual earful from their supporters, which, despite Mendenhall’s definition, were completely justified.

  • No, Rashard, a supporter is another name for a jock strap, not someone who blindly follows their favorite team. You, on the other hand, are a VERY highly paid athlete who should be able to focus on gaining yardage and not complaining about comments about your lack of production.

  • It's clear to me that football players are paid professionals, expecting to perform to the best of their abilty. When they do not they should get called out on it. Or should the fans be refunded their money after a lackluster effort. Or perhaps the player(s) who perform below standards be fired just like other real life professionals. If you go to a restaurant and get a bad meal, don't you send your food back. If a surgeon screws up an operation does he not get sued. The only recourse many fans have is to tweet or blog about it. I however feel it's the lack of a good secondary that is driving down the Steelers. Particularly when Troy Polamu is out. He is the cog that the defense is built around. So when he is out the defense needs to change and you can no longer leave those weak CB's on an island by themselves.

    Regarding Mendenhall, he's better off keeping his mouth shut and answering his critics on the field. I think he can be a contributor, but he's also the guy who probably fumbled away a Super Bowl victory.

  • Rashard, I don't do social media but I've been watching and rooting for the Steelers before you were even a dream of yo daddy and momma. The fans have ever right to critical. Athletes are overpaid and given exceptions. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE CRITIZEM, QUIT AND GET A PAPER ROUTE. Team's play so far this year sucks (coaches, players, special teams and front office). The Steelers are and have been for the past few seasons victims of the 6 Ps (piss poor planning promotes poor performance). So my advise id SUCK IT UP and play football. Maybe spend less time on social media and MORE TIME ON PRACTICE. You only play like you practice (think about it).

  • Mendenhall is another overpaid ,overrated player who should spend less time tweeting and more time playing football. Injury prone like Palamalou neither are helpful. The Steelers need to plan for their replacements via draft. Tomlin is clueless and has never been able to make the right adjustments during a game. The defense has been in decline over the last 2 years and now is exposed. Once a master defensive coach , now Lebeaux 's defense doesn't fool anyone. No one could mistake these Steelers with the Steelers of the 70's who played with broken fingers, and other injuries. No , today they are more committed to the next paycheck rather than the team or their craft.
