Ravens provide positive update on injured veteran

The Ravens seem to have a bad case of the injury bug once again, but they received some good news about one of their injured leaders on defense.

Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters that safety Marcus Williams, who injured his shoulder in Week 1, will not have surgery but instead rehab it and avoid landing on IR.

It is certainly great news as Harbaugh originally thought Williams would "be out for a while." The hope is that Williams will now be back within the next few weeks without being placed on IR.

Williams' injury was a blow to Baltimore's thin secondary, which has already seen injuries to cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Rock Ya-Sin. However, backup safety Geno Stone stepped up in his absence, intercepting QB Joe Burrow in the team's Week 2 win against the Bengals.

Harbaugh was pleased with Baltimore's next man up mentality after having five starters missing.

"It says a lot about the guys that played," Harbaugh said. "It says that those guys are starting-caliber players who played winning football against a great football team in their house. That's what it says. They deserve it."

The Ravens will continue relying on Stone and others while those like Williams get healthy. But Baltimore must be happy with its 2-0 start to the season given the number of starters out.

Once fully healthy, this Ravens team can be a real problem and QB Lamar Jackson knows it.

"Like I've been saying since camp, the sky's the limit for this team," Jackson said. "Our first game was like a preseason game for us, especially the starters because we hadn't played in a while together. But I felt like today we stepped it up."

Baltimore hosts the Colts, who have several injuries of their own, in Week 3.
