ST. LOUIS -- Unlike many NFL coaches, Rams coach Jeff Fisher is not one who typically rests his first-teamers in the preseason finale. Sam Bradford, for example, played long enough to throw for three touchdowns in the final exhibition a year ago. Fisher, however, might be changing his way of thinking for the Rams' preseason finale Thursday night against the Super Bowl champion Ravens at the Edward Jones Dome. Then again, he might not. It was difficult to decipher the way he danced around playing-time questions following the Rams' practice Tuesday. The philosophy has been to build reps throughout camp," Fisher said. That has been the way we've done it. We may adjust that ever so slightly this week." Does that mean the starters will play a fair amount? We're going to make adjustments," Fisher said. That's really all I can say." One Ram who can count on getting some playing time is running back Benny Cunningham. The undrafted rookie out of Middle Tennessee State has mounted a strong bid to make the roster, so much so that he now appears to be playing for more than a spot on the 53-man. I feel like I've done enough to show the coaches that I deserve to be here," Cunningham said. Hopefully, they see that." You can be sure they have. Heading into preseason game No. 4, Cunningham remains in the running to be Daryl Richardson's primary backup. Cunningham's main competition looks to be Isaiah Pead, who is suspended for the season opener, and fifth-round pick Zac Stacy out of Vanderbilt. Cunningham has averaged almost 4 yards a carry in the first three preseason games, gaining 47 yards on 12 carries with a long of 17. He also has caught a couple of short passes and impressed Fisher with a 33-yard kickoff return against the Broncos. I feel like I've done a pretty decent job in the preseason games with the opportunities I have gotten," Cunningham said. Hopefully, I can continue to do that in this next one." Even if he doesn't know how much he might play against the Ravens. Coach hasn't said what the rotation will be as far as running back," Cunningham said. I am preparing myself like I would if I was starting the game." Cunningham was enjoying a strong senior season at Middle Tennessee State last year until he suffered a season-ending left knee injury in the fourth quarter of his sixth game. He already had gained 600 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. While the injury held him back for months, Cunningham shows no ill effects these days. Listed at 5-10, 217, he could provide a more physical presence than Richardson. He certainly isn't lacking for confidence. While some players cut by the Rams this week have expressed hope that other teams now have tape to watch of their training camp work, Cunningham isn't concerned with such details. I look at is as I'll be playing for the Rams this season," he said. He'll be playing Thursday night for sure, even if only his coach knows how much. Notes The Rams released linebacker Jabara Williams and removed offensive guard Ryan Lee from the roster (waivedinjured) to get to the league-mandated 75-man limit by 3 p.m. Defensive end Chris Long did not practice again Tuesday. Fisher on Monday said Long is fine. The Rams worked for almost two hours in steamy conditions Tuesday afternoon. Fisher said the team will dial it back Wednesday in preparation for the preseason finale. You can follow Stan McNeal on Twitter at @stanmcneal or email him at

Rams want to get their running game going

Rams coach Jeff Fisher does not want the team's running backs to be judged solely on the preseason stats. However, it doesn't mean he's not concerned about their production. ''That's an area where we need to improve on, but we haven't had opportunities in the games to really just line up,'' Fisher said after Monday's practice. The Rams finish...

St. Louis Rams Training Camp-Defensive Observations

Jeff Fisher is a defensive coach and he definitely knows how to coach up young defensive players and turn them into stars. Jevon Kearse, Albert Haynesworth, and Cortland Finnegan just to name a few. Now, in his second full season with the St. Louis Rams, Fisher has taken a defense that was a liability and laughingstock into one of the defense's to watch this season. The Rams...

Rams hungry for more in Year 2 with Fisher

ST. LOUIS (AP) The Robert Griffin III trade helped speed the St. Louis Rams' arc from sad sack to respectability. In coach Jeff Fisher's second season, they'll be counting on more high-profile youngsters they've stockpiled to take the next step. Surplus picks from the deal with Washington for the second overall pick in 2012 gave the Rams confidence to trade up for...

Jeff Fisher: Rams won't show Tavon Austin’s complete package

The St.Louis Rams are counting on their new dynamic playmaker Tavon Austin to add some spark to their offense.  Their immediate plan according to coach Jeff Fisher is that they won’t unveil their deployment for Austin until the regular season. Fisher was on the Jim Rome Show and made it clear that Austin will be a force when it counts for real. Please click here to read this...

Jeff Fisher: Rams ‘Haven’t Shown’ How They’ll Use Tavon Austin

If you let Jeff Fisher tell it, the St. Louis Rams have big plans for rookie wide receiver Tavon Austin. What Fisher won’t do, is tell you what exactly the Rams have in store for Austin.  While talking to Jim Rome, Fisher stated that the “Rams haven’t shown what they really plan to do.” We have a pretty good idea [how we'll use him] but we haven’t shown it,” Fisher...

What to watch in Rams' preseason finale against Ravens

ST. LOUIS -- The Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens are coming to town, but you can be forgiven for not excitedly counting down the hours to 7 p.m. Thursday. The Ravens are visiting for a preseason game against the Rams, the fourth and final one, at that. Most teams tend to sit their regulars in the preseason finale under normal circumstances, and the Ravens have even more reason...

Rams have plans for Tavon Austin that they haven’t shown

I have been a fan of Tavon Austin since he was drafted, But his preseason stats haven’t shown much. He has only recorded 5 catches for forty yards. Rams HC Jeff Fisher has a very good explanation for this. They don’t want to show too much in the preseason. “We have a pretty good idea but we haven’t shown it yet,” Fisher said. “He’s not had a lot of production in the...

Jeff Fisher: Rams 'haven't shown' plans for Tavon Austin yet

Tavon Austin was the crown jewel of the Rams 2013 NFL Draft class. But thus far what he's done in the preseason has been a pretty big disappointment. That however is actually planned by the Rams. Jeff Fisher joined Jim Rome on CBS Sports Network's ROME Monday night and said that the team hasn't "shown" what they plan to do with Austin yet primarily because...
