The NFL on Saturday suspended Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes for one year and free agent linebacker Eric Barton for four games.
No reasons were given for the suspensions, although they are believed to be for violations of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
The ban of Rhodes, 32, is believed to be for a third violation. He played for Indianapolis in the final three games of last season - his first game action since 2008 - and had 172 yards on 37 carries.
Barton, 33, played all 16 games last season for the Cleveland Browns, making 66 tackles. The 12-year veteran also has played for Oakland and the New York Jets.
