Here is a quick recap of the Indianapolis Colts pre-season and also some of my thoughts on the recent cut down to the 53-man roster: Safety Delano Howell makes a case early Caesar Rayford made the 53-man roster and rightfully so (Photo credit: AP Photo/Kathy Willens) Howell played well during training camp heading into the pre-season, and this gave him the opportunity to showcase his talents on the field, as he started in the pre-season opener because of his play. He played almost the entire game and he played well. He continued to be pretty steady throughout the pre-season and he rightfully earned a roster spot because of it. Caesar Rayford the pre-season phenom Rayford is an outside linebacker who was recently picked up from an Arena Football League team. He is a tall man, at 6-foot-7, and showed a knack for getting to the quarterback this pre-season. He ended with 5 sacks in the 4 week span and he truly deserves his spot on the 53-man roster. This Colts team looks very different This team looks much different from last season, which already went through a lot of changes from the year before. From the defensive secondary pickups to the offensive line remodeling, there will be plenty of new players to watch for Colts’ fans during the 2013 season. Some thoughts on the cut down to the 53-man roster: There were a few guys that got the axe that I thought could’ve potentially made the roster, but was not surprised by their release; S Larry Asante and TE Dominique Jones. Asante had a solid pre-season and showed an ability to make some plays, but there were just too many safety’s in front After a good pre-season Drake Nevis was cut by the Colts (Photo credit: Andy Lyons/Getty Images North America) of him to be able to achieve a roster spot. Jones was a FB/TE combination and versatility is important in backups, especially on a team where those two positions are pretty important. However versatility didn’t seem to rule the day with Jones and he was cut. A release I was very surprised by was DE/DT Drake Nevis. Yes, he may not fit the bill as that versatile backup but he is very talented. I understand he isn’t a perfect fit for a 3-4 scheme, he’s in more of a 4-3 mold, but he is talented and he proved himself this pre-season. He played well, and for some reason the outstandingly less than mediocre Ricardo Mathews made the team over Nevis. I understand Mathews is more versatile, but Nevis is GOOD at what he does, while Mathews is barely average. I would rather have someone who is talented at what they do than someone who is just alright at several things. Alas, I am not in charge of the Colts’ roster and Nevis was cut and will swiftly be picked up by another team. Ladies and gentlemen the struggle of the pre-season is over, here we come real football! Go Colts!
