Washington Redskins prized quarterback Robert Griffin III watched from the sideline as his fellow rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the team to a 38-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
The Redskins have won five straight, improving their record to 8-6, and moved into a first-place tie with the New York Giants in the NFC East.
The Redskins own the division tiebreakers over both the Giants and Cowboys.
The Redskins and Giants split their season series, but the Redskins are 3-1 in the NFC East with two division games remaining while the Giants are 2-3 with one division game left. The Cowboys lost to the Redskins on Thanksgiving, and are 3-2 in the division with the season finale coming up.
“The main thing is we control our own destiny,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said via The Washington Post. “We know that. So any time you can control your own destiny with two weeks to go, it’s all you can ask your football team to do. We’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point. The job’s not done.”
In his first NFL start Cousins completed 26 of 37 passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
“This isn’t my first rodeo,” said Cousins, a fourth-round draft pick in April from Michigan State. “I did play a lot of football in the Big Ten and I had games like that where you start slow and you’ve got to have character. You’ve got to find it within yourself to dig deep and keep pushing. . . .We just found our rhythm. We got a good tempo going and we got our rhythm. It made all the difference.”
Running back Alfred Morris added a pair of touchdowns for the Redskins, whose offense scored 28 second-half points.
Redskins star QB RG3 was inactive for Sunday's game because of a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, but told the Associated Press, "I feel like I could have played this week, next week, the week after." "But that's not my decision."
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said "when I hear two of the best doctors saying don't play him, I don't play him."
The Redskins go on the road next Sunday to play the Philadelphia Eagles, and then come home to play the Dallas Cowboys for their final regular season game.

The Redskins continued their strong push for the playoffs behind their rookie quarterback. However, it wasn't the former Heisman winner behind center but instead a guy taken 100 picks later. If the Skins win they have about a two-out-of-three chance of making the playoffs for the first time in five years. If not, it’s about a one-out-of-three chance.* It’s also Kirk Cousins’ first NFL start. No pressure, no diamonds.
