The Redskins have signed punter Hunter Smith to a contract and he will join the team tomorrow, according to Rich Campbell. Incumbent punter Josh Bidwell has struggled with a hip injury and poor punts, as well as a problem or two on field goal holds. There’s no word on Bidwell being released on put on injured reserve, but it’s unlikely the Redskins will devote two roster spaces to the punter position, so Bidwell’s hours with the team are probably limited.
Hunter Smith punted for the Redskins last year, but struggled with injuries himself. From 1999 through 2008 Smith punted for the Indianapolis Colts, never missing a game and establishing himself as one of the best in the business. The Redskins signed him last year, but he missed 3 games to injury. He averaged 41.3 yards per punt on 57 punts last year, with 23 put inside the 20 and 23 fair catches. He’s also an accomplished holder for kicks and fans will remember he even threw a touchdown pass last year.
