The Penalty Flag:
Ashburn, Va- After watching his Washinton Redskins overcome a couple of interceptions, a blocked field goal, a blocked extra point all while being down by 10 points in the fourth-quarter, head coach Mike Shanahan watched the team’s six-game losing streak end on the road with a 23-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. A game that Seattle needed in order to stay on course for a playoff berth of their own. The victory gives the 4-7 Redskins some hope. Maybe faith would be a better word here. Faith that they are on course during this re-building period that several in the front office either support or deny. “Any time you fight back like we did, you feel good about your football team,” said a grinning Shanahan, whose team last won at St. Louis on Oct. 2. “It’s nice to get a win. It’s nice to do it that way.” Rookie running back Roy Helu rushed for a 28-yard touchdown with 9:51 left in the game, hurdling Seahawks defensive back Roy Lewis and highlighting a career day that had 23 carries for 108 yards and his first career touchdown. Helu’s personal-best 108 yards rushing (with a 4.7-yard average) in only his second career start with seven [...]

At the start of the season, your Redskins Hog Heaven writers told you two things about the 2011 Redskins:
1. The team would be competitive with both Rex Grossman and John Beck at quarterback. The key words were "both" and "competitive."
2. You will like the 2011 team even if they finish with the same record as 2010. We predicted seven wins for the team. You...
Roy Helu's hurdle gave Washington the kind of spark a team riding a six-game slide needs when it's down 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Then it was up to Rex Grossman and the Redskins' defense to put an end to the team's longest losing streak in more than a decade.
Helu's leaping 28-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter pulled the Redskins within three...
The first time I talked to former Nebraska and current Washington Redskins running back Roy Helu, we were on the same plane back from the 2011 scouting combine. Meeting and talking to this very humble player got me watching his game tape, and I was impressed with his raw speed and ability to make plays in the passing game.
We did a podcast together in March, and I took note when...
ASHBURN, Va. -- Roy Helu is becoming too productive to ignore. Give the Washington Redskins rookie a start, and he’s good for about 150 yards of total offense.
At least that’s what happened the first two times he got the nod. He piled up 41 yards rushing and...
It had been quite a while since Anthony Armstrong last did the Dougie. So it was a sight for sore eyes on Sunday as the receiver danced away the bad memories of the Redskins’ six-game losing streak after catching a 50-yard touchdown pass to provide the difference in a 23-17 win over the Seahawks.
It’s no secret that Armstrong has been in Mike Shanahan’s doghouse this season...
Sunday’s win was a milestone for the 2011 Redskins. Not only did it snap a losing streak, it also marked the first complete team win of the season. Nearly all facets of the team contributed positively—offense, defense, running game and passing game. Only the kick protection and offensive line stood out as weak spots. Although Rex Grossman was sacked only once, he was victimized...
I know some of you are fond of Football Outsiders, (as am I) so once the season gets underway and trends start developing, looking at an opponent’s rankings on Football Outsiders helps to give fans some perspective.
(As a heads up, negative percentages are good on defense, bad on offense & specials)
Pass Offense: -13.2% (27th)
Rush Offense: -9.2% (30th)
With the Jets taking on rookie phenom Roy Helu and the Washington Redskins, the team is going to need all the help they can get to stop the running game. The bad news though is that the team looks to be without Mike DeVito, yet again, after an injury setback Sunday that has kept him from playing much of the past month.
Rex Ryan said that Jets DT Mike DeVito will likely not play...
